What a treat. Scoble got a tour of Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Lab in Pittsburgh, PA. Check out the soccer-playing robots. Oh, and see the art of discovery at the time it happened. "It worked!" And, not just fun robots either, the teams there are developing robots to help during heart surgery and other medical proceedures. It's very rare to get a tour like this, so enjoy!

Also check out the Microsoft Robotics Group video.

Scoble?

He is not leaving until end of this month. In any case, I suspect these must be few weeks old.

You guys should bring Robert in every few weeks as the "guest" cameraman, interviewer, background laugh provider guy Smiley We'll miss those background cellphone rings Wink

I'm the video guy
Yeah, more than a few weeks, I shot this back in January and just never ran it for some reason. It's just a really cool tour. Has almost nothing to do with Microsoft. Today's my last day in the office, Friday is my last day as a paid employee. Oh, and I have a bunch of other videos that'll run over the next few weeks.

Yippi skippy

I think that little soccer playing robot is so cool. I liked how it actualy tracked the ball.

So 2050 is the year Robots vs Humans in a soccer game.

"The Segway is capable of speeds up to 20 miles per hour. A speed-governing key is used to limit the speed of the personal transport model to 10 miles per hour, or "three times faster than the average walker." "As of June 2000, the fastest running human is Michael Johnson, 1996 set the world record of running 200 meters in 19.32 seconds. Johnson's record can be calculated to equal 10.35 m/s or 37.267 km/h
Ill be rooting for the Robots. Smiley

I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
Every time I see one of these cool robotics videos, I can't help but feel sad that all the really really interesting robotics research and advancement are being made overseas. You don't see such crude robotics technology over there anymore, but highly sophisticated ambulatory robots that can mimic many human activities. I really hope America can catch up.
I've programmed for soccer playing robots before. For one of my course projects back at university, I wrote a reinforcement learning ai that actually managed to learn how to play a decent game of soccer. Though the one's that I worked with, are these little round circular things, http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~coral-downloads/small/movies/Research/HumanVsRobotsSmall.asf (video's also from Carnegie Mellon, though I didn't go there myself)

a lot of interesting things going on in robotics...

anyone going to be at AAAI that's coming up?

This is great stuff. Innovation is cool (soccer playing robots). Thanks guys for doing this. We'll miss you scoble good luck.

o btw Charles "procedures" only has one e. Not trying to be a smart a** .
