Karsten Januszewski has posted a write up on his XAML Playground project, a design surface written in Silverlight using Gestalt.  The source code is available so you can see a glimpse into the work it takes to create a design tool.

ok now take that and put it into VS 2010 and add the rest of the features so that 2010 has WPF and SL designers that are close to the same level as the old winforms ones!!

Well, how is MS going to make money of off Expression?

I don't see it happening, this whole concept of splitting designer-developer roles is to make more money, while many shops do not have dedicated designers and now need to buy 2 apps instead of 1, or just do everything by hand in xaml.
