MSDN Wiki Projects - #1 - Saying Hello

This short video is the first of a four part series in which I sat down with Fabrice Fonck and Molly Bostic to talk about the MSDN DevWiki project.

As usual, I walked in thinking I already had a good grasp on the subject, but quickly found out that things were much more complex than I ever would have thought.

For example, do you have any idea how many user interface elements there are in Visual Studio? How many words there are in the documentation?

I had a figure in my head - just a wild guess based on what seemed realistic to me.

I was off by several decimal points.

Like many other web devs, I've done a lot of internationalization work, but nothing like this.

That same complexity is the reason it was decided to kick off some wikis for MSDN. One for general documentation (look for "Community Content" mixed in with the normal stuff), and the other for internationalizaion (Portuguese).

The task itself is amazing, and that doesn't even account for all the planning around infrastructure. It's hard enough documenting a large product - now imagine doing it in a bunch of different languages.

This video is the introduction to the topic, and the next three drill down into specifics.

If you feel like you have a little too much on your plate at work, then watch this series. You'll feel much better Smiley

Yup - that's right.

When I edited it, I thought I had cut off that last part. My guess is that the work area of the clip was smaller than the size of the clip itself, so I accidentally left in about a second from the next video in the series.

It won't happen again (now that I know what to look for) Smiley

I usually download shows and today I decided to watch it online and I found out that there is no Volume Control in the player Expressionless Probably you guys should include that.

One more question, what technology do you guys use to stream the videos? When I right click on the player it says save as jpeg. I was thinking it might be wmv or flash. Smiley

Btw looking forward for the whole interview.

I also like to download and watch the shows. Big Smile

I guess it's kinda trend or option that can be taken by video contents publisher NOT to include volume control in player panel. Smiley You would also see the player w/o volume control on Channel10 (on10.net) site. Maybe it's giving a watcher a default/current sound (volume) setting of pc, disallowing any change of setting thru the player. Expressionless

The image we see on the page when we open it and when we try to save using right-click would be a palyerPreviewImage to represent the specific video content in overall, I guess. Smiley Oh, these guys use mms (mms://) streaming for sure with wmv file inside, along with activex control and ole object stuff for player, I guess. Smiley (All of my guess coming from page source Big Smile)

You shall all rejoice when they roll v4? I heard a WPF/E embedded player is in the works.

On a side note, I enjoy what I saw of the video (I speak french fluently), you rarely see that aspect of a product. Plus whodathunkit, 1 million!

How come you did it in 4 parts? From what i have seen now it could be done in 3.
Doing this short movies im not a big fan of tbh.

Doing parts is fine, BUT this short clips doesnt work i think. No disrespect intended.

looks like some real hardwork. But I wonder why they shoudl do this. Probably wanna make it OS and browser independent. Probably I should try if the online player will work if no mms support is available

Btw ya, I also wanted to point one more thing, having 4 parts each 6 mins long is kinda boring. Probably you should have 2 * 20 instead.
