In this video, we look at how to configure and use a build server in your own organization for use with the Team Foundation Service Preview. To do this you will need to install and configure the build service from the Team Foundation Server 11 Developer Preview installation. The developer preview is available to MSDN Subscribers via the Subscriber Downloads section or visit the Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview page to find out more. This video shows you how to install and configure the build service and attach it to your service preview account. You will see the process of configuring your build server using Visual Studio 2010 SP1 with the service preview hotfix (KB2581206) installed. Finally, learn how to create an automated build from Visual Studio using your newly installed build server and how to access the build results via the web. This video is part of a six-part series diving into the details of the recently announced Team Foundation Service Preview: Introduction Getting Started Manage Security Agile Project Management Using Visual Studio, Microsoft Test Manager, and Eclipse Team Build (this video)

Thanks for putting these together. I received our Team Foundation Service Preview account at BUILD, and am now creating a few projects on it. I am starting with smaller projects that we have on our traditional TFS, and will see how the team does with transitioning to TFS-as-a-Service.

posted by jmilgram

Hi!
Nice video, thanks for your work )

I have question regarding local TFS 2011: should it be installed on machine with global static IP address? If not how does my project on tfspreview.com get know about build server? Am I right that local TFS 2011 send a kind of "i'm alive" signals to my account on tfspreview.com and in this case no matter what IP do I get from my provider?

posted by Violet_Tape

@Violet_Tape: You are correct. We changed how the build controllers and agents work in TFS 2011. They now call home and communicate via the Application Tier then keep that channel open so that the AT can send messages back when it needs to do something. This way you don't need to worry about IP addresses, NAT traversal, reverse proxying etc. It should all just work provided the build controller has access to a internet connection (even if that connection is proxied). This is one of the reasons why you need to install the TFS 11 version of the build agent to get it work with tfspreview.com

Hope that makes sense. Let us know how you get on.

posted by martinwoodward
