In Singapore’s Microsoft Innovation Centre,  we have been innovating on Virtual Earth. In this quick chat, I caught up with Alvin Poh, to find out what innovation he has been working on. Dubbed “Schools Near Me”, the application allows us to use a Postal Code, retrieve a set of GPS coordinates and pulls a map from Virtual Earth and overlay data onto the map to provide meaningful services and information. As the name suggests, this applications allows us to find all the schools around where I stay.

In a recent Heroes Community Launch, Dennis (IT Pro Evangelist) caught up with SQL Server MVP, Wee Hyong, who is one of the brains behind a local community event. The event combines 3 local community groups and runs a full day of topics, Tech.Ed style. Wee Hyong discusses about how he applied Data Mining techniques to help with generating more personalized experience and what Data Mining could do to drive the communities forward. In this video, we have Wee Hyong (Singapore SQL MVP) doing a short discussion with us about the cool features found in SQL 2008 Nov CTP. He will also be talking about the new spatial support found in the CTP.

This is part 1 of a 3 part series. In Part 2, he will be doing a deep dive in the 2 new spatial data types (geography and geometry), along with spatial indexing.

During this week's MSDN TechTalks, Chewy showed a 15 min demo where I built a website from scratch that allows the user to type in their Singapore postal code and a Singapore map shows up with a pin on top of the postal code (every postal code represent a distinct building unlike others where the code can specify a geographical region). This demo has resonated quite well with the attendees at the event.  A number of them wanted to see the code so they can build a "here are my stores" map and embedded into their web sites.  As such, I just recorded a video of me doing the exact…[more ]
