The company went through some rough years to begin with but when they were able to license MS-DOS to IBM things really took off. The IBM PC took the world by storm despite its lack of power (my &lt;a href="http://www.gadgets-4-free.co.uk"&gt;free ps3&lt;/a&gt; has many times more power than even a supercomputer of years gone by) and its success took Microsoft along with it. In 1986 the company went public and made Gates a 31-year old billionaire. The year after the first version of Windows was introduced and by 1993 a million copies per month were being sold.
