Meet the Azure team at PDC09

David Gristwood goes roving with his video camera at the PDC to meet some of the Azure team who are responsible for building Azure and deciding the features make it into the product set. This is a great chance to hear some of the team talk about their areas of focus across Azure, including:

- The Azure developer experience

- What the Azure fabric controller is and how it works

- What the new Codename “Dallas” project is about

- The newly announced Appfabric and how it relates to .NET Services

- The role of the newly released Windows Identity Foundation

And last, but by no means least, take a tour round one of the new Azure storage containers that was on display at the show.

(There is a bit of background noise in some of the interviews, but that’s the buzz from all the folk attending the PDC, but we hope it doesn’t detract from the video interviews).

Juval Lowy - Introducing the .NET Service Bus

The .NET services bus is part of the new Microsoft Cloud Computing Windows Azure initiative, and arguably, it is the most accessible, ready to use, powerful, and needed piece. The service bus allows clients to connects to services across any machine, network, firewall, NAT, routers, load balancers, virtualization, IP and DNS as if they were part of the same local network, and doing all that without compromising on the programming model or security. The service bus also supports callbacks, event publishing, authentication and authorization and doing all that in a WCF-friendly manner. This session will present the service bus programming model, how to configure and administer service bus solutions, working with the dedicated relay bindings including the available communication modes, relying on authentication in the cloud for local services and the various authentication options, and how to provide for end-to-end security through the relay service. You will also see some advanced WCF programming techniques, original helper classes, productivity-enhancing utilities and tools, as well as discussion of design best practices and pitfalls.

Windows Azure extended Interoperability presented at PDC09

During day one PDC09 keynote, Ray Ozzie highlighted Microsoft’s commitment to interoperability announcing additional technologies you can now use on Window Azure Tomcat (Java), memcached and MySQL.

We sat down with Steve Marx (Technical Strategist in the Window Azure team) and Vijay Rajagopalan (Principal Architect in the Interoperability team) to discuss these new possibilities.

Meet the people behind the Window Azure SDK for PHP Maarten Balliauw

Maarten Balliauw from RealDolmen initiated the Windows Azure SDK for PHP a few months ago. Since then we have been working together to improve the project and we were very excited to announce at PDC09 the availability of version 1.0 of this SDK.

In this video, Maarten Balliauw and Vijay Rajagopalan from the Microsoft Interoperability Strategy teams discuss how this project came to life, and show demo of the SDK using the Windows Azure Tools for Eclipse.

SI WMP Handles Client Need in 10 Days Using Azure

Frank Campise speaks with Erik Brown, tech lead at West Monroe Partners (WMP). The client need: “provide an interactive map for the Taste of Chicago in 10 calendar days." Designed, tested, provisioned and deployed. The event gets approximately 3 million attendees so it was possible to get 2,000 to 50,000 hits in a day.

They chose Windows Azure, so they could focus their precious time on the solution for the City of Chicago client. As a result, WMP: delivered a richer solution than anticipated within the 10 day deadline; had peace of mind that the infrastructure solution will “work” regardless the traffic they get.

Their solution called TakeComics finally solves the problem of trying to find that missing issue of your favorite comic as well as new comics and render them digitally on many devices.

In a few days of development the TakeComics team were able to build a solution that could render comics and let you interact them using Windows 7 touch capabilities.
