A Peek Behind C9 Revolution UX

As we get closer to the start of the Channel 9 Revolution, we wanted to give you a peek behind the thinking that is going into the new UX, how we came to some of the decisions we have, and a chance for you to speak out in favor of the direction of the next Channel 9 guy.

Nishant Kothary and Jeff Sandquist stopped by the studio to show us wireframes and talk about some of the new features. Let us know what you think and don't forget to visit the poll and vote. Remember, if you don't vote you can't complain. :)

The Future of Channel 9

Last week on this week on Channel 9 we announced a project that we’ll use to improve the user experience of Channel 9. This work along with improvements to our content strategy will enable us to bring Channels 8 and 10 content back into Channel 9.

We call this project Revolution 9 and when released it will consolidate Channels 8, 10 and Coding4Fun into Channel 9. The community aspects of Channel 8, will move into Microsoft.com/Student creating one place for students and Microsoft moving forward. TechNet Edge and Mix Online will stay exactly as they are, with no changes.

To find more information on why we’re making the changes on last week's This Week On Channel 9. It does a good job of walking through it in great detail. Over the coming weeks and months we’ll walk you through the experience and our progress towards launch.

Thanks again everyone who visits Channel 9 and our communities. We’re excited about what we have in store for the future and look forward to evolving Channel 9 together.

Jeff Sandquist: Channel 9 Through the Years

When we launched Channel 9 five years ago we weren't sure what to expect from the community and from Microsoft. What would developers think of this non-corporate, free wheeling website designed by and for geeks and developers (and one great designer, David Shadle - designer of the 9 Guy and first iteration of Channel 9)? Did we do the right thing? Will Channel 9 be taken seriously? Are we crazy? Well, history has answered these questions and the next five years will be very interesting indeed. I thought I'd pay a visit to my friend, fellow Niner and co-conspirator Jeff Sandquist. I don't think I've ever really interviewed him. 5 years!!! Wow.

Long time Niner, typography master, ClearType co-inventor and more-than-avid reader Bill Hill reflects on Channel 9, the state of the economy, Homo Sapiens 2.0 and the next version of, well, Bill Hill (Bill Hill 4.0?). :)

Bill was the focus of one of the very early interviews on Channel 9 and it was where we captured the raw human quality that makes Channel 9 special. Of course, Bill Hill is great to listen to and learn from. We were lucky to get him early on in our development as it really helped us grow and plot a content course for C9. Thank you, Bill. You are a legendary Niner. Much love!

Eric Lippert: Happy Birthday Channel 9!

Five years ago, Eric Lippert played the esteemed role of C9 interview guinea pig. He was the first engineer we interviewed and it was his interview that showed us that we might just be on to something. For those of you who are sticklers for detail, yes, Eric's interview did not ship first on the site, but it was the very first interview conducted.

I remember all of us (Bryn, Jeff, Lenn, Scoble, Charles) huddled around my office watching the conversation with Eric, at that point in time an engineer on the Trinity team. We looked at each other and smiled. This is so cool, we thought. C9.Iterate( 5 );

What a great five years it's been since then and a great big THANK YOU to Eric for letting us into his office with a camera five years ago. Here, Eric reflects on Channel 9, his current role as C# compiler developer and of course Niners.
