A chat with Sara Ford - CodePlex turns 3, reaches 10,000 projects

Microsoft's open source forge CodePlex has just turned 3 years old and passed the auspicious milestone of 10,000 active projects (actually 11,025 at time of filming).

We thought this would be a good time to sit down with Sara Ford - Agile Program Manager for CodePlex - and recap on the past three years, CodePlex's current feature set and what's in store for the future.

Yuri Alkin is a man of many interests, and many great accomplishments. He leads the Enterprise Social Computing team (over at Engineering Excellence group) responsible for Microsoft internal projects such as CodeBox, ToolBox and Mingle. His job is to lead creation and adoption of systems that help people at Microsoft achieve more by connecting and collaborating with each other. Another way to define his job (in case you like buzzwords) is to say that he's responsible for driving adoption of Enterprise 2.0 technologies and practices at Microsoft. He is passionate about the opportunities social computing brings to the enterprise and has been spearheading Microsoft's major internal efforts in this space. So, let's get to know Yuri Alkin.

LitwareHR SaaS Sample Application - Tenant Provisioning

LitwareHR is a SaaS reference implementation application that provides recruitment management software. This application was released in February as part of Microsoft's SaaS architecture guidance. You can get more information on LitwareHR's community site at codeplex.

Once the This screencast shows the "behind the scenes" actions this service does:

creates one virtual folder and two virtual directories in IIS for tenant's public and private sites
adds tenant basic information in MetadataStore database
inserts default tenant preferences in MetadataStore database, such as entity extension fields, workflow definitions and rulesets
creates the view filter for the position entity
creates an sql view that the tenant will use to retrieve the position entity fields
creates an Organizational Unit (OU) in the Authorization store (ADAM) with users and roles support

LitwareHR SaaS Sample Application - Datacenter Provisioning

This screencast shows in detail the actions performed by the script in charge of setting up the structure needed to support LitwareHR's application.
This is what we call "Datacenter Provisioning" and creates databases in SQL server, users and roles structures in the ADAM and websites in the IIS.
After this Datacenter Provisioning is done, each tenant will be able to perform a "Tenant Provisioning" which will add tenant information in those repositories and will let the tenant to start trying the application.

Meet the CodePlex team. They are a very innovative group of passionate people who all work in the same office. Yep. One team. One office. It makes for a very agile and tight knit product team and the CodePlex team model is quickly becoming the next big wave here at Microsoft in terms of product team architecture. Of course, besides talking about agility and office design, we get into some of the details of CodePlex, which is a shared source community development site written on top of Team Server and pluggable into your VS environment. Really great stuff.
