.NET Framework++: Moving Forward and Staying Compatible with the Past

You've recently learned a good deal about the next version of the CLR here on Channel 9. One of the things that is top of mind for engineers who create and consume the .NET framework (CLR + BCL) is compatibility with previous versions. In fact, much like security, compatibility is something that is front and center during feature design meetings: "Will this break an application that depends on the version we're updating?". The question is easy to understand, but extremely difficult to answer without extensive testing, implementation refinements, extensive testing, implementation refinements... In some cases, due to impossible compatibility requirements, new features do not see the light of day. It's just part of the business, part of the dance of software evolution in the context of real world customers who depend on current iterations of .NET.

Here, we meet some of the folks who spend a great deal of time ensuring that the compatibility bar is met, breaking changes are isolated and communicated and bridging the gap between dreaming up new features and not breaking old ones. This is a very hard job and often does not receive the credit it deserves (well, at least from the outside looking in). Principal Test Manager Alain Raitt, Program Manager Preeti Kurup, and Program Manager Lead Mike Downen share with us the challenges and opportunities of compatibilty, the advances in the state of the art of compat testing and future directions. Much thanks to you three and the legions of engineers who ensure that the next versions of .NET remain as compatible as possible with older versions.

Inside IE 8 RC1 with Dean Hachamovitch and Jason Upton

IE team General Manager Dean Hachamovitch and IE Test Manager Jason Upton sit down with me to discuss the significance of today's IE 8 RC1 release. What did the IE team learn from the Beta 2 release? What changes did they make in response to customer feedback? Will the IE team still take and act upon fedback now that RC1 is here? With so many browsers on the market today how does IE remain competitive and maintain marketshare? No conversation on IE can be complete, of course, without talking about the web platform and standards so we go there....

IE 8: Compatibility and Versioning

As software evolves so to does the need for newer software to remain compatible with older versions. In the case of IE the notion of backwards compatibility is quite daunting and of supreme importance to the IE team. Consider the millions of web pages that were written to run successfully in older versions of IE. The latest incarnation of IE, IE 8 Beta 2, has a very useful compatibility feature that enables developers and users alike to run IE 8 in a mode that won't break pages that work in IE 7. It's as simple as pressing a button. Unlike IE 8 Beta 1, instructing IE to render a page in Compatibility mode does not require a browser restart. This is very cool indeed.

I wanted to find out exactly how this new compatibility mechanism works in IE 8 and discuss the complex issue of backwards compatibility and its impact on innovation with IE 8 Program Manager Scott Dickens. Scott is very passionate about compatibility (in fact his thinking up and prototyping ideas about IE 8 compatibility began as a side project which, not surprisingly, turned into a full time job for him).

Tune in and learn about how IE 8 compatibility mode works and learn why it works the way it does.
