Dell’s Inspiron Duo is the World’s First Fliptop PC

Laptop, Desktop, now Fliptop. Dell may state their new Inspiron Duo PC has a flip-hinge design, but I think Fliptop is a much better way to describe their innovative new form factor.

At first glance, the Duo looks like a standard 10.1” notebook, but give that screen a little tap, and it’ll flip right around to switch into a touch-screen tablet.

Armed with Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel’s Atom N550 processor and 2GB RAM, the Inspiron Duo also packs a suite of touch apps to convert the PC into a picture frame, alarm clock and touch screen music player. Drop it into the optional JBL Audio Station speaker dock and you can really get the party started.

It’s dinky, so you’ll only get a couple of USB 2.0 ports, but there’s 320GB hard drive on board, Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity and a SIM Card socket for web on the road. As ever in life, not all is perfect – note that the Duo lacks Ethernet and video out ports, so it’s very much designed to be a mobile device.

Remember, “Fliptop”, you heard it here first. Rats, just checked the web. Everyone’s calling it a fliptop. Bah.

ARCast.TV - Bob Pearson on The Business Benefits of Social Networking

When you think of the phrase “Social Computing,” you probably think of teenagers sharing pictures with their BFFs or folks “micro-blogging” on Twitter, but if you think that’s all social computing is all about, you’re wrong. There can be tangible business
benefits to embracing the principles of social computing. Providing community forums where your customers can talk about your products, provide service information to each other and provide direct, candid feedback about how you can make your products better
is exactly what Denny Boynton talks to Bob Pearson, VP of Communities and Conversations at
Dell Corporation, about in this episode.

<itunes:summary> At CES, Dell unveiled several new additions to their netbook line, including the new Dell Mini 10. This little computer features an "edge-to-edge" 720p 10-inch display, an “edge-to-edge” keyboard, a built-in TV tuner, integrated 3G WWAN / GPS, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a multi-touch trackpad, an Atom Z530 CPU, and exclusive gestures (Home Screen, Auto-Scroll and My Favorites). No pricing or availability has been revealed yet, so it looks like you’ll still have some time to figure out if you’re going to get the Mini 10 or the other hot new Dell netbook: the luxurious Adamo.
The Dell Dock Now Available For Download

Oh sweet! I just installed the Dell Dock on my PC. You may remember hearing a while ago about how Dell was pre-installing their own custom app launcher on their Studio Laptops. However, back then there didn’t appear to be any way to get access to their proprietary software short of actually buying a PC with the Dell Dock installed. That doesn’t appear to the case any longer.

I’ve been monitoring this thread on Dell’s IdeaStorm site, patiently waiting for someone to post the links I was too lazy…err…busy…to locate myself. Sure enough, a few days ago a user posted links to two different versions of the Dell Dock application:

http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/STARDOCK_DELL-DOCK-APPLICATI_A03_R186613.EXE

http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/DELL_DOCK-APPLICATION_A03_R192718.EXE

“Download both and install. One of them will work for you,” he says. Since I have an Inspiron 1520, it was no problem to install the executable, which is packaged just like any other Dell driver. (No idea if it will run on any other PC brands…let me know). A few minutes later, my Dell Dock was up and running.

Although I had been using RocketDock before, I prefer how the Dell Dock lets you group several different applications under one heading (menu icon). For example, under the “Office” icon there are icons for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can customize the dock by adding your own apps either to the dock itself or under one of the main headings. And when you move an app onto the dock, the software asks you if you want to leave the shortcut on the desktop or remove it. You can also customize the dock’s location, behavior (like the auto-hide setting, for example), and even its color.

If you like using docks for desktop organization, this one isn’t too bad. I just might have to keep it.

Dell’s New Studio Hybrid PCs

At long last, the new “green” PCs that have been under development at Dell have finally arrived. The Dell Studio Hybrid PC is 80% smaller than the conventional desktop mini-tower while also using 70% less power than typical desktop PCs. Their small form factor lets them fit almost anywhere and the optional wireless keyboard and mouse help kill the clutter. The PCs are Energy Star 4.0 compliant (of course!)and can be customized with 6 interchangeable color sleeves or even a sleeve made of environmentally- friendly bamboo. Despite their small size, the Studio Hybrid still finds room for a CD/DVD drive, analog and digital sound ports, a gigabit networking port, and HDMI and DVI ports. The PCs start at $499 and go up depending on your customizations like selecting a Blu-Ray drive, more memory, or a larger hard drive.

Multi-touch, which started at Bell Labs nearly 25 years ago, is the hot technology this year and without a doubt one of the technologies I get asked about most by family and friends.
