Deploying IIS 7.5 + FASTCGI + PHP on Server Core

Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core introduces support for subsets of the 2.0/3.0/3.5 .NET Framework in addition to a number of other new optional features and roles. These additions extend the role of Server Core system deployments to not only enterprise network service hosting but also to application hosting. The Framework additions make it possible to host The Web Platform including ASP.NET web applications. Windows PowerShell is available along with the integrated IIS Provider. Application Developers should ensure their new and existing Enterprise Solutions integrate well with the Server Core deployment environment.

FastCGI is a language-independent, scalable, open extension to CGI that provides high performance. The FastCGI extension is available in IIS 7.5 and enables application frameworks such as PHP to achieve improved performance and stability on Internet Information Services.

This demo illustrates FastCGI configuration on a Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Core deployment target.

This entails creating self-signed certificates. IIS7 provides an easy way to do this, but there are issues. In this screencast, I will detail how to create self-signed certificates correctly and how to configure them appropriately in order to develop and test secure solutions. Here in Singapore, we started a LAMP2WIMP project team. Focus, to help PHP application owners realize that Windows Server 2008, IIS7 can be an option for them when running PHP applications.

In this video, we interviewed Tian Yan, founder of Tyler Projects on the benchmark exercise which we did here in MIC Singapore. Windows 2008 in this benchmark, beats both centos and fedora.

Mai-lan Tomsen Bukovec: From the Peace Corps to IIS 7

Meet group program manager, Mai-lan Tomsen Bukovec, who has been at Microsoft for nine years (Talk about a blast from the past . . . remember Microsoft Transaction Server? Mai-lan was on that team back in the day.). Mai-lan is currently on the Internet Information Services (IIS) team where she manages PMs working on IIS and the Windows Server Hosting System. What does that mean? Well, for starters, she and her team define the features of the core web server, as well as the management tools and administration interfaces plus they work on media server and providing the right tools for the web hosters of the world (like GoDaddy, for example). Phew! That’s a lot. From the Peace Corps to working at a couple of start-ups during the Internet boom when she left Microsoft for a bit, Mai-lan really has a worldwide global perspective. The remote administration service in IIS7 is a new and powerful feature that allows us to connect securely to our remote IIS server using a firewall-friendly SSL connection. Additionally, we can choose to use traditional Windows accounts for authentication or choose the new IIS Manager user accounts instead.

We will walk through the steps you must perform as the IIS administrator as well as the experience for a remote administrator using delegated features.

Failed Request Tracing on IIS7

In this screencast, we see how to configure our IIS7 server for Failed Request Tracing (sometimes called FREB). Failed Request Tracing is a powerful new capability in IIS7 that allows us to easily set rules on our web applications, that once triggered will log that request to disk and pull in all the relevant trace information. This feature is immensely useful for troubleshooting running applications where attaching a debugger is impractical.
