Social Web Experience for Internet Explorer

Today a new experiment comes out of Redmond in the form of a new toolbar for Internet Explorer that analyzes the web pages you are looking at and applies what it sees to your social networks. This means the proper nouns and contextual references in the sites you're looking at are matched up to the things your friends might be talking about. So if you're browsing a movie review, you may see what a friend wrote about that movie as an inline contextual update.

Emre Kiciman and CK Wang from Microsoft Research joined us at the Channel 9 studio to talk about the Social Web toolbar and how it works. You can download the Social Web Experience Toolbar for IE here.

Web Application Toolkit: Internet Explorer 8 Extensibility

Today users can access rich information and services while they are browsing a site; it's not a trivial task to expose this content to the same users when they are not on that site. The goal of this Web Application Toolkit is to leverage the new features in Internet Explorer 8 (Web Slices, Accelerators and Visual Search Providers) to extend the reach of your web site and services also to those users that are not on your site. The Web Application Toolkit includes a set of ASP.NET Web Controls that you can use to take advantage of these IE new features in your own Web application.

Great example of a WebSlice from Web Design World site

This is a great example of how to use a WebSlice effectively. On the Web Design World site you can grab a WebSlice of the agenda, which displays just the sessions for Day 1. Presuming that the WebSlice will then update on Day 2 to display the Day 2 sessions, my hope is that every conference follows this pattern. Add a mobile version that does the same thing and you have happy well-informed attendees.

Internet Explorer 8 treasure hunt - find the buried $10,000

At first when I saw this headline, I thought we'd be hunting for wooden chests and hiding from pirates. But of course this is the Explorer of the Internet holding the $10,000 Browser contest, so instead the goal is to use IE8 to find the "Claim the Prize" button somewhere on the internet. The contest comes out of Austrailia so you must be a resident to win.

eBay sidebar for Internet Explorer 8 uses Silverlight
