Internet Explorer 8 Web Slice Tutorials Available

6 tutorials on Web Slices have been posted to MSDN.

"In these short lessons, you will learn how to add Web Slices to an existing Web page. You start with a Web page that contains a fictitious conference schedule, a weather report, and ticket auction for a hit Broadway musical. Initially, the page contains one simple Web Slice, but you will gradually implement additional functionality."

You can also download the Web Slice Tutorials for offline use.

Internet Explorer 8 named most secure browser

Yes, you read that right, Internet Explorer was named by NSS Labs the Most Secure Browser. Giorgio Sardo, our IE Evangelist, fittingly has all the details.

Nice flipping Silverlight Photo Module on MSN Korea

The MSN Korean team has added a new Silverlight Photo viewer on their main site. Its nice and subtle and rotates time-based or by mouse hover, bu there are two interesting details.

First, they "localized" the Silverlight install experience. In Korea, people are accustomed to ActiveX installation. If a user who doesn’t have the Silverlight runtime installed, they see the green install bar in IE.

They other detail is they've made the Photo Module available as a Web Slice. So you can quickly browse the photo in IE any time. Nicely done.

Internet Explorer 8 - Donating meals for downloads

John Hrvatin, Program Manager of Internet Explorer Developer Tools sits down with me to discuss at a high level the new additions to IE 8's developer tools (aka Dev Tools). These include JavaScript performance profiling, CSS profiling and formatting exploration. And, there's more. :)

IE Team to Mozilla: Congratulations!

In what has now become a tradition, the Internet Explorer team sent a "Congratulations on Shipping!" cake to the Mozilla Foundation headquarters for shipping Mozilla Firefox 3.0. As you might be able to see in the picture, the ring around the Internet Explorer "e" is actually three-dimensional and it's certainly more fancy than the cake they previously sent Ryan Paul at Ars Technica

Jane Kim: From Inventing To Implementing IE Features

Jane Kim, senior program manager on the Internet Explorer team, talks about how the IE team really cares and connects with the community in this episode of WM_IN. A Northwestern grad and seven year Microsoft vet, Jane discusses how the IE team has their own voice via the team blog and how they are striving hard to engage with their customers.

As a PM on the team, Jane helps create new feature sets based on customer research and she works with the team to understand the scenarios in which customers will be utilizing those features. Listen to Jane as she tells the story of how she went about pitching one of the new IE8 features, WebSlices, to her management. (WebSlices enable users to subscribe to specially marked content on a Web page. When the content changes, the user receives a notification on the Favorites Bar.) Ritzy and Carmine meet yet another woman who was good in math as a youngster in school (Perhaps this is a pattern, people?), and they enjoyed hearing Jane talk about why she became a PM instead of a developer (Debugging is for the birds!).

Chris Wilson: Inside IE8 Beta 1 For Developers

Today, we release IE8 Beta 1 to the world! It's a developer-focused version of IE 8 (thus the name) with a host of new dev features. Chris Wilson, Platform Architect and long time IE team veteran sits down with me to dig into the details of IE8 Beta 1. Some of coolest new features include Activities, Webslices, Javascript debugging and tools, DOM storage, AJAX enhancemnets, cross-Domain AJAX, and more. Chris also talks about the core architecture of IE8 (Trident, MSHTML, etc).

IE 8: On the Path to Web Standards Compliance - ACID 2 Test Pass Complete

The IE team has been very hard at work on IE 8 for the past several months and they hit a huge milestone last Friday evening. The IE dev team checked in a bunch of code that included several new features implemented in the core rendering engine that enable IE to pass the ACID 2 test! This is great news for web developers: IE 8 is going to be our most standards compliant browser to date. Passing ACID 2 is really a combined side effect of all the new features that have been developed for IE 8.

In this interview, I sit down with IE GM Dean Hachamovitch and Architect Chris Wilson to discuss this milestone and dig into compliance in general, lessons learned from IE 7 and discuss the IE team's ultimate goal of de facto interoperability. Of course, no Channel 9 interview is complete without meeting some of the devs who actually write technology so we take a walk from Dean's office to super developer Alex Mogilevsky's office to discuss what's been done to provide IE with the core rendering features that enable IE 8 to pass the ACID 2 test. We also chat with CSS guru Markus Mielke who was instrumental in identifying and planning the feature set required to pass ACID 2.

TechNet Radio: Learn about the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008

Server Core is a new minimal installation option of Windows Server 2008 that uses the command prompt as the local shell and runs a subset of the Server Roles in Windows Server 2008. This allows you to run your core infrastructure roles on Windows Server, while reducing the management and maintenance required. In this TechNet Radio session we will discuss the Server Core architecture, functionality and how it compares to Linux.

Debugging Jscript in IE using VWD Express

If you want to debug Jscript code in your web pages in IE, then you can make use of the "Visual Web Developer" (VWD) tool which is available as a free download from Microsoft website. VWD is a tool which is mainly used to author and debug your own web sites. However if you want to debug Jscript code in a web page which you have not authored or which is served from a remote web server or http location, then you need to create a dummy web site project in VWD and set it up to launch your web page when you start debugging.

In this video we present the exact steps to acomplish this.
