Windows Live Mail Desktop beta

I chatted with Bryan Starbuck and his team about the new mail client that works with Windows Live Mail and all your POP3 and IMAP accounts as well... and RSS... and seems to go way beyond the feature set of Oulook Express.

The new Windows Live Mail Desktop beta that is shown in the video will be released in early June. Users can sign-up on http://ideas.live.com/ in order to receive an invite as the beta scales up over the next several months.

Note that the name “Windows Live Mail Desktop beta” is a place holder name until the final name comes in :)

In this video log, Ichnohe-san who creates gadgets for MSN Japan talk about the following topics:

This video has only overview information. To further discussion, I'd like to create other video log entry that covers how to develop gadgets in detail in the future.

Also in this interview, we invited the evangelist of Channel 9 for Japan. He is the actor, Mr. Yousuke Ichikawa.

This video log is a pilot entry. I've already understood various subjects for creating video especially for audio enhancement.

Scott Isaacs is one of the inventors of DHTML. He is one of Microsoft's smartest Web developers and built a framework that's being used on Start.com, the future Hotmail, and other places like the new gadgets in Windows Vista. MSN Virtual Earth Team - Virtual Earth Ships

A couple of months ago we interviewed the Virtual Earth team and got an early look at what they were planning. They have now gone live so we went back and interviewed the team again. They jumped right into a demo and talked about some hot secret features: locate me and a developer SDK.

Sanaz Ahari and Steve Rider - Start.com

After shooting this interview with Sanaz Ahari and Steve Rider I wrote a fun blog post titled: Hadi Partovi, what are you thinking?

That's cause this small team (now three people) is doing an innovative news portal, er, RSS aggregator, over at start.com.

They just updated that site too, details are on the start.com blog.

Anyway, hope you enjoy meeting this team as much as I did. The interview started in Sanaz's car so you can see what MSN's location looks like.

Virtual Earth: MSN's answer to Google Maps

I spent some time today interviewing the Virtual Earth team. This is MSN's answer to Google Maps, coming in July 2005. As you see in the video MSN Virtual Earth goes noticeably further than Google Maps or other mapping services.

Later today we'll put the video I shot of them up on Channel 9.

Omar Shahine - Inside Hotmail

Hotmail. It's a service that's often overlooked at Microsoft. But hundreds of millions of people use Hotmail every month. Billions of email messages flow through its datacenters every day.

Anyway, we went down to Silicon Valley to meet with Omar Shahine. Hey, it was an excuse to see the sunny weather down in California. He's the lead program manager on the Hotmail front door team. In other words, every email on Hotmail goes through a system his team designed.

Omar, who has a blog here, takes us through Hotmail's architecture and more.

Well, on second thought, do you have anyone in your life who doesn't yet have a computer? Who is scared of computers? Who you'd like to email pictures to, or have a chat once in a while with?

MSN TV 2 a pretty low-cost box that hooks up to your TV set and your phone line. Voila, you're on the Internet. Anyone can run it.

Matthew Carlson - How do we know that Microsoft isn't doing anything evil with the information custo

Matthew Carlson, program manager on the Alerts team, talks about the privacy policies that are in place on MSN to protect customer's data. "Is Microsoft big brother?" Alerts let enterprise customers like United Airlines build new services that'll "alert" you when something important is happening (like your flight status can be flashed on screen if there's a delay).

Also we ask him "what's the biggest misperception that he sees people having about Microsoft?" Matthew has worked at Microsoft for about two years and runs the Alerts team.

By the way, Matthew told us that Alerts are done in .NET and coded in C#. Just in case you were wondering.

Matthew Carlson, program manager on the Microsoft Alerts team, talks about what happens when a key service at Microsoft goes down. Alerts are the messages that pop up at the bottom of your screen if you've signed up with services like MSNBC or United Airlines. At Microsoft we call those messages "toast" because they pop up like a piece of toast from the bottom of your screen.

You can tell Matthew is a program manager. Why? Cause he puts the good spin on. Truth is, if something goes down here all heck breaks loose. Luckily for Matthew alerts doesn't go down very often.
