PCs taken out by viruses not only create downtime but can cause irreparable damage to vital data, costing a business thousands of dollars.

I read a great post this week from IT Consultant Dave Duggan who finds a lot of older, Windows XP PCs out there in the businesses he works with which are ripe for attack, without firewall and anti-virus protection, and running with full administration privileges. As Dave writes, that leaves them open to accidental “drive by” infection from nasties picked up during web browsing.

Whilst the cost of maintaining anti-virus subscriptions for multiple PCs may have been a legitimate concern in the past, small businesses with less than 10 PCs can now benefit from free (yes, really free) malware protection, courtesy of Microsoft Security Essentials.

Microsoft Security Essentials offers regular updates to protect against the latest threats and runs silently in the background, so if you don’t need it, you won’t know it’s there. And it’s free (did I mention that?). Dave points to a series of walkthrough videos which outline how easy it is to get protected.

The only barrier to millions of additional PCs being protected is ignorance – it’s a shocking statistic, but research indicates that some small business owners do not hang out at Channel 9, so may not be aware that they can benefit from this free anti-virus protection.  So, next time you meet a small business owner, in the workplace, or perhaps over dinner, make sure you ask what protection they use (it’s an idea to phrase that question carefully). You may just be the guy that saves their business.

If you’re an existing Windows Live Spaces user, there’s no need to panic! You have six months to make the move over to your new home, and you’ll find tons of support available to help you get there as well as migration tools which will make the move as easy as possible.

I’m sure you’re keen to check out what your new site will look like at Wordpress, but with six months to make the move, why not take some time out to revamp your blog?

    You’ll find over 75 free themes available to radically change the design of your blog. You can change colour palettes, switch between single and multi-column layouts and insert custom header images to truly personalise your blog. If you’re a dab hand with CSS (or want to learn through experimentation), then you can tweak your design to your heart’s content (via an upgrade).

  2. Sidebar Widgets
    Developers have been busy creating hundreds of sidebar widgets for Wordpress, which can be dragged and dropped into your blog’s sidebar to add new features. Photo sideshows, video players, Twitter feeds and a whole lot more are available to add content into your blog.

  3. Works Well With Windows Live Writer
    If you’re yet to discover Windows Live Writer, then this is your opportunity to check it out. WLW is a fantastic post creation and editing tool that allows you to write your posts offline, add images, embed videos, tags and set categories before uploading and publishing live to your blog when you’re ready. Check out Windows Live Writer’s Plugin Gallery too for hundreds of additional features from the developer community. Windows Live Writer is freely available as part of the Windows Live Essentials Suite, and once configured with your Wordpress.com account details will quickly become your best friend.   4. Spam Canned
    Blog spam can very quickly turn the fun of writing a blog into an administrative nightmare. Fortunately, Wordpress.com’s Akismet feature blocks spammers from leaving comments and trackback spam on your blog.
     
  5. A Fresh Start
    Having moved my own blog a few times, I’ve found it gives you the opportunity to step back, have a good think about your writing, and make a few changes and improvements. Migrating to Wordpress may provide the impetus to take your blog in a whole new direction, or simply make a few tweaks here and there. 

Once you’ve found your feet with Wordpress.com, you may want to go the extra step and host your blog on your own server. Wordpress runs on Windows, courtesy of the Microsoft Web Platform Installer, which will install key components such as Internet Information Services (IIS), SQL Server Express, .NET Framework and Visual Web Developer. If you’re running  IIS with SQL Server or SQL Azure, there’s a patch available to get Wordpress working with your setup too.

James C. Towne is appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft. In July he takes over all responsibilities from Bill Gates, who will assume the title of Executive Vice President, responsible for all development activities. Gates remains Chairman of the Board. Towne was previously Vice President and General Manager of the Instrument Division at Tektronix. He is replaced by Jon Shirley the next year.

Microsoft announces the availability of its symbolic mathematic package muMATH/muSIMP for the IBM Personal Computer. This package is also offered for the Apple II, TRS-80, and CP/M-80 computer systems.

Paul Allen is diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, which is localized and in a very treatable form. He is on a limited work schedule while undergoing treatments. Although his treatment is successful, he will resign from Microsoft in 1983.

· Hinckley Found Not Guilty: John W. Hinckley, Jr. was found not guilty because of insanity in shooting of President Reagan.

· Israel Invades Lebanon on June 6. The immediate cause cited for the invasion was the attempted assassination of Israel's Ambassador in London. Israel's plan was designed first to create a buffer between Lebanon and Northern Israel. The incursion quickly grew to a full-fledged attempt to destroy the P.L.O.

· Good News for Dieters: 1982 gave us the beginnings of Diet Coke and Equal artificial sweetener.

· Academy Awards: the 1982 Oscar for Best Movie went to "Gandhi."

· New Communist Leader: In Russia Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev died at age 75 and the Kremlin command passed to Yuri Andropov. Brezhnev had suffered from arteriosclerosis of the brain.

· Record Breaker: Cal Ripken began playing for the Baltimore Orioles. By Sep 20, 1998 he had played a record 2,632 consecutive games.

· Computer is Man of the Year: Less than four months after IBM introduced the PC, Time Magazine named the computer as the man of the year! Never before (or since) had an inanimate object been chosen as the "man of the year".

· Tylenol tampering scare: In the fall of 1982, seven people die from taking cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. The nation panics and Johnson and Johnson quickly recalls over 30 million bottles.

· Equal Rights Amendment defeated: The ERA, that would prohibit discrimination by sex, falls short of ratification when the deadline passes.

· Newspaper in Technicolor: A new publication called "USA Today" launched in full blown color, a first for a newspaper.

· Falkland Islands War: Argentina invades the British-occupied Falklands. After two months, Argentina surrenders to British forces on June 14.

· Princess Grace Dies: Princess Grace of Monaco dies from injuries suffered when her car plunged off a mountain road. Her daughter, seventeen-year-old Stephanie, a passenger in the car, suffers bruises and trauma.
