Using Eclipse to build Silverlight applications in Java, PHP and Ruby

As hard as it might be to believe, not everybody is using Visual Studio as their development platform. Then what if they want to develop a Silverlight application? Is notepad their only option?

Fortunately not. Vijay Rajagopalan did a session at MIX09 earlier this year which shows how we've been working hard to provide interoperability support for Eclipse users that not only allows them to use Eclipse as their development environment, but also allows them to integrate their Silverlight applications into PHP, Ruby, or Java.

Virtual Earth continues to evolve and support a very robust programming model which allows developers to create unique and interesting mapping applications. One of the most recent developments is that there is a brand new Virtual Earth Mapping control which uses Silverlight for rendering. This provides for a far richer control which gives the developer almost unlimited potential in what they can do. In this episode I've got Chris Pendleton on hand to help us understand some of the benefifts of this new control and show us some of its capabilities.

1st place - MIX09 Show Off Contest - Physics Helper using Silverlight

An overview of the Physics Helper Library, which allows you to draw objects in Expression Blend 2, and have those objects translated directly into Physics objects using the Farseer Physics Engine. This can be a great timesaver for creating games, as it is traditionally difficult to line up underlying physics bodies, joints, and geometries with your Blend artwork.

Honorable Mention - MIX09 Show Off Contest - Silverlight Commodore 64 Emulator

Cycle-exact Commodore 64 emulator written in C#, much ported from C++ Frodo emulator. Done just to prove Silverlight can do almost anything. Most C64 hardware is emulated and it’s running off real C64 ROM images. Display is a MediaStreamSource 50fps video I’m generating from raw emulated VIC-II graphics chip output.

Bill Buxton is the author of Sketching User Experiences: Getting the Design Right and the Right Design, is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and has a 30 year involvement in research, design and commentary around human aspects of technology, and digital tools for creative endeavors, including music, film and industrial design. Prior to joining Microsoft, he was a researcher at Xerox PARC, a professor at the University of Toronto, and Chief Scientist of Alias Research and SGI Inc, where he was a co-recipient of an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement!
