Web Application Toolkit: REST Services

This Web Application Toolkit shows how to easily add REST service interfaces for an existing Web application. The Web Application Toolkit includes a sample of REST services based on a fictitious online auction site. It exposes an API using REST services built with the Windows Communication Foundation that can consumed by client applications. Two sample client applications are included, one using simple ASP.NET pages to consume the REST service and show a list of ending auctions, and a second Web application using AJAX to asynchronously invoke the REST service to show a list of most viewed auctions. The Web Application Toolkit also includes a custom project template for Visual Studio to make it easier to build new REST Services.

Building RESTful services with the ADO.NET Data Services (Dutch)

In this session you will learn how to use the ADO.NET Data Services Framework to easily create and consume REST data services on the web. We will cover the main concepts of the ADO.NET Data Services and show you how to use it in WPF and Silverlight 2.0 client applications.

Consuming data over the web between PHP and .NET with REST and ADO.NET Data Services

Claudio Caldato, Senior Program Manager in the Interoperability Technical Strategy team and Pablo Castro, software architect of ADO.NET Data Services introduce a new project that bridges PHP and .NET: the Toolkit for PHP with ADO.NET Data Services.

The PHP Toolkit is an open source project available on Codeplex at phpdataservices.codeplex.com. The goal is to make it easier for PHP developers to take advantage of the ADO.NET Data Services (ADO.NET Data Services offer a simple way to expose any sort of data in a RESTful way, more details here).

The video starts with a quick introduction and architecture white boarding session, followed by a demo.

Securing REST ful services

REST is an acronym for Represntational state transfer, REST defines an architectural style based on a set of constraints for building things the “Web” way.

In this screen cast I will demo how to secure a restful web service using WeServicebHost2Factory and Request Interceptors in WCF Rest Starter Kit. i will implement both Basic Authentication Request Interceptor and also Authorization Header token based authentication.

Well, this session delivers on that – not once, not twice, but thrice! We’ll look at accessing remote data services from Silverlight using a standard SOAP-based WCF service, then graduate to creating and consuming a RESTful service via the WCF REST Starter Kit, and end by accessing an Entity Framework model fronted by an ADO.NET Data Service.

REST (Representational State Transfer) is all the rage as a lightweight, web service architecture that relies on existing web standards such as HTTP and XML.

In this session, you’ll get insight into the roots of REST, including its four main tenets, and be able to critically discern how “RESTful” various external offerings are. Also covered are new features in .NET that align to RESTful approaches for data and service access including the WCF REST Starter Kit and ADO.NET Data Services.

In this short video, CSD MVP Aaron Skonnard from PluralSight guides the viewer through different techniques for processing messages using the new HttpClient class that ships with the new WCF REST Starter Kit Preview 2.

In this screencast, Aaron builds on the simple Twitter command shell application started in the previous HttpClient screencast and used through this series. To process the messages (both XML and JSON), Aaron layers a data contract over the incoming message, to allow the .NET developer to work with the content in a strong typed, dot-notation fashion. After demonstrating how to hand-craft the .NET objects, Aaron demonstrates how to use the new 'Paste XML as Serializable Type' command to automatically generate the .NET classes from a sample Twitter XML response.

In this short video, CSD MVP Aaron Skonnard from PluralSight guides the viewer on how to manage query string and form input while consuming REST services.

In this screencast, Aaron builds on the simple Twitter command shell application presented in the previous HttpClient screencast. Aaron modifies the previous code to build a query string on the fly using the new HttpQueryString class, adding information provided by the user at runtime. And to perform a status update to Twitter, Aaron uses the new HttpUrlEncodedForm class to process a form POST command to the Twitter service.
