In Part 1 of this interview, we talked with Wayne Ruting, CEO of Decentrix, about the importance of business intelligence in a Media & Entertainment company. Decentrix has quite a client roster, including some of the largest broadcasters, cable operators, and telcos in the US. We talk about why BI matters, how BI is not simply providing reports in a transactional application, and we learn more about Decentrix and their BIAnalytix offering.
In part 2 of this interview, we will see a demo of BIAnalytix.

<evnet:views>8599</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/478588/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>In this episode, host Kirk Evans talks with Dr. Michael Ludwich, VP of Consulting at Decentrix, where Dr. Ludwich provides a demonstration of the BIAnalytix solution. This quite an interesting demonstration, helping to show the value of BI in a media organization. The toolkit focuses on the MIMOSA and OPC/OPC-UA organization specifications, and the working code samples demonstrate scenarios that might be implemented in a manufacturing environment. Top things developers should know about SQL Server – Leveraging the SQL CLR

It’s rare that a developer doesn’t need some familiarity with the database his or her applications are targeting, so this session (divided in to five parts) provides a bit of insight into features of SQL Server 2008 (and 2005) that they should be aware of when building .NET applications. The series is a “top 5” countdown, and in this first segment, we talk about how to leverage the .NET CLR inside of SQL Server, including an introduction to the new data types in SQL Server 2008 (hierarchyid, geometry, and geography).

The analytics accelerator provides a set of Performance Dashboards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for analyzing the data residing within the CRM platform. It utilizes SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) for creating OLAP cubes. SSAS is also used here for creating predictive analysis with some fully functional samples. The analytics accelerator will work with SQL Server 2005 with some components enhanced to take advantage of SQL Server 2008.

After 3 years of Ashton-Tate where he was first introduced to SQL Server in 1988, Gert joined Microsoft in 1991. Prior to his current position he was a member of the SQL Server development team where he held various positions varying from development to management. He contributed to SQL Server 7.0, 2000 and 2005; some SQL Server artifacts he worked on are: BULK INSERT, SQL-DMO, SQL Query Analyzer, SQL Profiler, DTS, SQL Agent and SMO. After SQL 2000 he joined the Indigo team where he designed the System.Transactions API and worked on MS-DTC and the web services (WS-AT) transaction specification. In September of 2003 he joined the SQL Server Customer Advisory Team where he focused on helping customers design and implement the largest SQL Server implementations in the world. In July 2005 he started the DataDude project, which goal in life is to provide an offline schema development and deployment environment for SQL Server and other data stores. Right now the team is finishing up the 3rd release of the product! When Gert is not working, he is spending time with his wife and three lovely daughters; loves to cook and make music. Besides that he is serving the SQL Server community by writing tools and articles which are published on http://SQLDev.Net and various magazines.

<evnet:views>15198</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/426760/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) Database Edition enables developers to apply agile practices to the database tier. By combining data services with the Microsoft Sync Framework, learn how to create offline-capable applications that have a local replica of their data, how to synchronize that replica with an online data service when a network connection becomes available, and how replicas can be used with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Explore problems such as the ambiguity in spatial constructs, the certainty and precision of spatial calculations, and how types interact with indexes. Beyond understanding, see a demonstration of techniques for dealing with these issues in SQL Server 2008 using both built-in spatial functionality and server extensions.

Isaac Kunen

Isaac Kunen is a senior program manager on the SQL Server engine programmability team.
