Scott Guthrie sits down and talks to us about his History with Visual Studio, .NET and what Life at Microsoft used to be like.

Scott Guthrie is corporate vice president of Microsoft's .NET Developer Platform, where he runs the development teams responsible for delivering Microsoft Visual Studio developer tools and Microsoft .NET Framework technologies for building client and Web applications.

A founding member of the .NET project, Guthrie has played a key role in the design and development of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework since 1999. Guthrie is also responsible for Microsoft's Web server platform and development tools teams. He has also more recently driven the development of Silverlight – a cross browser, cross platform plug-in for delivering next generation media experiences and rich internet applications for the Web.

Today, Guthrie directly manages the development teams that build the Common Language Runtime (CLR), ASP.NET, Silverlight, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), IIS, Commerce Server and the Visual Studio Tools for Web, Client and Silverlight development.

Guthrie graduated with a degree in computer science from Duke University.

Welcome to the first installment of the Visual Studio Documentary.This is an hour long documentary that is split into two parts, roughly a half hour each. Welcome to part one, where we take you back to the days of MS-DOS and Alan Cooper who originally sold Visual Basic to Bill Gates back in 1988. Next week we will feature Part Two but for those that would like to watch it sooner, here is Part Two. In addition, each week we will post a longer and more in-depth stand alone interview from the interviewees that were featured in the documentary.

Today, we announce the general availability of Silverlight 3 and the Release Candidate of Expression 3. To celebrate this momentous occasion we had a few conversations with Scott Guthrie about what it all means and where it's going.

Here, VP Scott Guthrie and Director of Program Management of Expression Blend Christian Schormann sit down with me to discuss the implications of Silverlight 3 and related tools for both developers and designers. We also discuss how it is that their teams can release versions of their software so quickly and with such high quality. How does SketchFlow work and why did we invent it? Of course, we have to talk about HTML5 since most everybody else is out there... Then, there's the notion of Silverlight running outside the context of a web browser - what does this mean, exactly and how does it work. As usual, we touch on the future...

Silverlight 3 has arrived in beta form. Expression 3 also ships today in Preview form. Grab the bits and play. Provide feedback. OK. That's the housekeeping stuff. Now, on to this conversation with Scott. We talk about many things in this interview and weave the deeply technical view on Silverlight 3 with more surface level perspectives. So, if you're looking for bite size marketing messages, this video isn't for you :)

What are the significant changes/improvements/inventions in Silverlight 3? Silverlight 2 brought the world a cross platfrom CLR. How has the CLR changed in Silverlight 3? Silverlight 3 enables Silverlight to run outside the context of a browser. What does this mean, exactly? Silverlight and Many-Core? What has the significant real world feedback been like regarding Silverlight 2 and how has it helped shape Silverlight 3? It's always fun to talk to Scott Guthrie, VP of all things .NET and one of Microsoft's most prolific technical bloggers (he actually writes all of the entries on his blog which is quite a feat given his schedule and time constraints as a corporate Vice President). Many of you have seen his keynotes over the years, which are always among the most popular and highest rated by conference attendees. It's no surprise that he will again headline at MIX this year. Wonder what he'll be talking about? We discuss this here (and he addresses what it's like to speak in front of a large audience - for people who know Scott, he's actually kind of shy.
