Silverlight 3 UK Launch: Chat with Ian Ellison-Taylor

At the recent UK launch of Silverlight 3 in the UK I managed to catch up with Ian Ellison-Taylor.

Ian is the general manager of the Presentation Platform and Tools which means that he's general manager for things like WPF, Silverlight, the toolkits associated with them and the tooling that goes with them - generally, this makes him a very interesting chap to chat to :-) and in this video we cover lots of semi-random ground that you'll hopefully find interesting!

The usage of Silverlight to provide users a rich internet experience continues to increase. As it becomes a key element on our web applications, it is good to keep in mind that it still runs code on the user's machine.

That is why Maqbool Malik, from Microsoft Information Security, describes some key features added on the second version of Silverlight to enhance security.

Among the features discussed, Maqbool talks about XAP files, cross-domain policy files, HTML access, etc.

It started as a conversation about "crowd sourcing" images that people have already tagged as New Zealand to construct a demo from our shipping Silverlight 2 technology. I spent 3 days building a "demo-ware" prototype and presented it during a keynote slot at WEB09.

Following that we held a Silverlight 3 camp over 3 1/2 days. At the camp Tim (a devloper from Wellington) improved my original prototype to make the image tiles clickable. I then took Tims work and adapted it to make a version two of my original design.

Artist Explorer - a Silverlight 2 Mashup

At the South by Southwest Interactive Conferece in Austin, Texas this past week, Mashery hosted a contest, Circus Mashimus to encourage people to create mashup applications using their customers' web services. I learned about it a week before and decided to create an entry using web services from Best Buy, The New York Times, Billboard, and Intelepeer (not a Mashery customer but one of our partners). The mashup is an artist explorer that lets you research musical artists using the services and then lets you send an SMS message about your findings to anyone's mobile phone.
I will be releasing Silverlight kits with source code for each of the APIs (Best Buy, The New York Times, Billboard, and Intelepeer) shortly - watch my blog for more info on the kits. With these Silverlight kits, developers and designers can access these companys' services and build cool applications with little to no coding - just Expression Blend.
