Joe Stegman, Director of Program Management on the Silverlight team, joins us to discuss Silverlight 4's Out of Browser improvements (OOB means you can run Silverlight applications on the desktop, outside of, well, the browser...). Of note, you can now interop with COM objects in SL4's OOB. We also touch on the the future of Silverlight and clearly define the distinctions/differences between Silverlight and WPF. When to use SL? When to use WPF?

Isolated Storage en Silverlight

Nos encontramos ante un nuevo video de Alejandro Hidalgo, en el que nos habla del Isolated Storage. En caso de que necesitemos guardar datos de nuestra aplicación Silverlight de forma permanente podemos usar el Isolated Storage. El cual nos aporta un sistema de ficheros virtual cuya localización en disco estará ofuscada. Esto nos puede servir para guardar en cliente datos y recursos de gran tamaño que puedan ser reutilizados durante la sesión actual del usuario o la siguiente.

NBC Winter Olympics on Silverlight

NBC and Microsoft are getting the band back together for a full Silverlight experience around the 2010 Winter Olympics. You'll have DVR control of the video, including rewind, sharing, and saving clips. There will be a Facebook Connect feature to allow you to socialize the insanity (or coolness, depending on your POV) of skiing with a rifle.

The site will also include Deep Zoom photo galleries so you can enjoy each flake of snow individually. More details to come as we get closer to the event. Related article from TechCrunch.

Using Eclipse to build Silverlight applications in Java, PHP and Ruby

As hard as it might be to believe, not everybody is using Visual Studio as their development platform. Then what if they want to develop a Silverlight application? Is notepad their only option?

Fortunately not. Vijay Rajagopalan did a session at MIX09 earlier this year which shows how we've been working hard to provide interoperability support for Eclipse users that not only allows them to use Eclipse as their development environment, but also allows them to integrate their Silverlight applications into PHP, Ruby, or Java.

Silverlight and HPC Enable On-Demand Engineering Design

dezineforce (http://www.dezineforce.com) recently completed a proof-of-concept with Microsoft to look at how they could overhaul their user experience using Silverlight 3.

dezineforce offer a scalable, on-demand engineering design capability over the web. Backed by a powerful HPC cluster, their front-end web interface is currently built using HTML and AJAX. They were keen to explore opportunities to build an enhanced experience for their users.

In this video I chat to some of the people involved in the project to get their perspective on the project and the results.
