Social Web Experience for Internet Explorer

Today a new experiment comes out of Redmond in the form of a new toolbar for Internet Explorer that analyzes the web pages you are looking at and applies what it sees to your social networks. This means the proper nouns and contextual references in the sites you're looking at are matched up to the things your friends might be talking about. So if you're browsing a movie review, you may see what a friend wrote about that movie as an inline contextual update.

Web Application Toolkits: Make your website "Social"

Adding social capabilities to your Web site allows you to attract new users, keep them on your Web site for longer and get them to come back more often. In this screencast we explore this Web Application Toolkit that shows how, using a few lines of code with the Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit, it is possible to add social capabilities to a Web site with instant messaging from a website to various client endpoints like Windows, Windows Mobile, Xbox 360 and Mac. Behind the scenes is a powerful set of UI Controls and a JavaScript library that connect your website to the Messenger Service which is used by 330 million users around the world.

Ballmer Promotes Windows Cloud, PDC 2008

The noise around PDC went up last week when Steve Ballmer, speaking at the final keynote at the Gartner Symposium in Orlando, came to the stage and explained why people should care about Microsoft’s cloud OS: “We have a big announcement in two weeks at our Professional Developers Conference and we’re going to run through this stuff,” said Ballmer.

Partner Conference: SalesCentric Silverlight CRM Relationships

I spent most of last week in hot and humid Houston at the annual Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference. I did get to a few sessions but mostly I hung out with ISV partners in 1:1 meetings or in the exhibit area. There were tons of CRM ISVs showing interesting solutions.

One that caught my eye was SalesCentric. Their solution is a simple but important one. Many sales cycles are very complex and long, involving interactions with many people within an organization. SalesCentric takes the list of contacts in the CRM system and makes the the relationships among them easier to visualize and discover. I was most interested in how they had transformed their ActiveX product into a brand new Silverlight solution. I thought others might find this interesting as Silverlight starts to get some attention. I also get excited at the possibility of seeing this as a mechanism for bringing information from other systems such ERP systems for example or maybe even social networks for the ultimate selling tool.
