The APIs in WPF4 plus the Surface
Toolkit for Windows Touch make building common touch scenarios easy. However, implementing many of the same touch scenarios using WPF3.5SP1 or Silverlight 3/4 involves writing a fair bit more code. Furthermore, the touch APIs across WPF4, WPF3.5SP1, and
Silverlight are different.

The goal of this project is to simplify building common touch scenarios when using WPF 3.5 SP1 or Silverlight 3/4 by using Expression Blend Behaviors to provide a consistent way to implement these scenarios across WPF & Silverlight. Expression Blend Behaviors
can be used within Visual Studio without a dependency on Expression Blend by downloading the Expression Blend 3
SDK. You can also find more Expression Blend Behaviors athttp://expressionblend.codeplex.com/ and http://tinyurl.com/ExpressionGalleryBehaviors.

SurfaceCube: Design Thinking for Natural User Interfaces

Microsoft Surface is a prime example of how natural user interfaces can change the way we interact with computers. As designers and developers, one challenge with creating natural user interfaces for multi-touch devices such as Microsoft Surface or Windows
7 is getting around the old ways of thinking and old habits for interface design.

Joshua Blake from
InfoStrat decided to tackle this problem by creating SurfaceCube. SurfaceCube is a simple 3-D puzzle game for Microsoft Surface which he designed to illustrate as many as the Surface Interaction Guidelines as possible. I had the opportunity to sit down
with Joshua and discuss SurfaceCube and the thinking behind some really interesting design decisions that makes it stand out as a natural user interface.

We also briefly discuss Joshua’s upcoming book about natural user interfaces and multi-touch development,

The possibility I like best about this is the ability to touch your games while still seeing what is there. <itunes:summary>Every year at TechFest, Microsoft employees (and a few invited guests) get to take a look at some of the projects out of Microsoft Research. These aren't finished products--you'll see a lot of exposed wires and tape--and in fact, they may never become
completed products at all, but each project shows what we're thinking--and maybe where we're going.
This year I met with a team from MSR Asia who have constructed what they hope will eventually be a pico-projector portable computer, and in this project you can see inspiration from
Microsoft Surface and

Second Light. The possibility I like best about this is the ability to touch your games while still seeing what is there. Additionally, if you use physical controls on apps, such as knobs, you can actually paint labels on the controls themselves.

Mobile Surface is a novel interaction system for mobile computing. Our goal is to bring the Microsoft Surface experience to mobile scenarios and, more importantly, to enable 3-D interaction with mobile devices. We will demonstrate how to transform any
surface, such as a coffee table or a piece of paper, into a Mobile Surface by using a mobile device and a camera-projector system. Besides the Surface, we will show 3-D object imaging, augmented reality, and multiple-layer 3-D information visualization. In
particular, we have developed a system with the camera-projector component to scan 3-D objects in real time while doing normal projection. To visualize, 3-D data can be projected onto a surface formed by a piece of paper while maintaining the original scale
as if it were printed on that paper, and a user can interact with the projected content with a hand. Mobile Surface enables you to interact with digital contents and information around you from anywhere.

Pictionaire, a new Multitouch Table from Microsoft Research

A joint project from Microsoft Research and the University of California brings us another touchscreen, mutitouch table-top computing experience. Like a larger version of Surface, the Pictionaire, as it’s called, is also operated via human touch using gestures made on the table’s surface. However, unlike Surface, the camera used features a higher resolution - and it’s positioned above the computer’s screen, via a mount on the ceiling. With this setup, the camera can “see” the items placed on the table and when the item is removed, it can be replaced with a digital version. For example, if you place a keyboard on the table, the Pictionaire will pull up a text-entry box. If you place a sketchbook on the table, a digital version of the page soon appears. You can even do this process in reverse – the Pictionaire can project a digitized image onto the real life object, like the digital sketchpad image projected onto a piece of paper so you can trace it back onto the physical page.

To see the Pictionaire in action, check out the videos posted over on Slashgear.
Hard Rock in Vegas Gets Microsoft Surface and Touchscreen Rock Wall

Microsoft Surface is in the spotlight again.
InfoStrat.VE: Integrating Virtual Earth 3D into WPF and Surface Applications for Mere Mortals

Virtual Earth 3D has many applications, but until recently has only been practical on the web with a JavaScript interface. WPF applications could not use the full potential of
Virtual Earth 3D without requiring a WPF wizard and some XAML magic due to Win32 interop limitations.

Information Strategies (InfoStrat) has the solution. They created a WPF / Surface control,
InfoStrat.VE, and are sharing with the community on CodePlex. This control provides a WPF interface for the Virtual Earth 3D control, complete with data binding for camera control
and WPF-based pushpins. All Win32 restrictions (air space control, no rotation or visual brush) are eliminated.
Microsoft Surface is also supported.

Watch the interview to learn the history behind the control, see it in action, learn how to get started, and even contribute back to the community.

The video is a little long, so we have provided a timeline below in case you want to skip to specific sections:

00:00 Introduction / Background

10:18 DEMO: Surface application using InfoStrat.VE

15:00 CodePlex project / code walkthrough

38:15 DEMO: Surface application using advanced capabilities in action

43:08 Wrapup / community call to action

Finguistics: An Educational Game for Surface

A UK-based educational software company called RM has a Microsoft Surface game for students in development meant to show how the computer can be used in an educational setting. There’s now a (long 10-minute) video of this game in action which is available for viewing here on YouTube. The video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how the application was put together by RM, Lightbox, Infusion and Microsoft UK. “Finguistics,” in you’re wondering, is a word play application for Surface where students ages 5 and up, spell short words, make sentences, or play puzzle games in English, Spanish, and French. It sort of reminds me of magnetic poetry, I have to admit.
