Visual Studio 2010 recently released a new beta of Visual Studio 2010, which includes a variety of improvements for a broad spectrum of developer needs. For PDC09, Chris Tullier and Todd Girvin will present a day-long workshop which specifically focuses on the use of Visual Studio Team System to manage software development tasks for teams of any size.

Chris Tullier joins me on today’s episode to discuss his upcoming workshop and share some details and insights on how Visual Studio Team System can promote and support better software development practices.

"Glenn Pittaway the Group Program Manager for the Secure development Lifecycle (SDL) talks about the past present and future of SDL. The SDL methodology is at the core of all development work that has an internet facing element (i.e. virtually everything!) at Microsoft. You might argue that this gives this gives Microsoft developers an edge over the competition as they can write more secure code more quickly, however these same SDL resources are also publicly available so you can adopt the same approach in your organisation."

10-4 Episode 18: Functional UI Testing

In this episode of 10-4 we look at a new type of test coming in Visual Studio Team System 2010 known as the coded UI test. Coded UI tests can be created to automatically navigate through your application's UI, which in turn can be used to verify that the paths your users might take through your application are working properly. You can also add validation logic along the way to verify the properties of objects within the UI. Much like unit tests can quickly surface regressions on a method or function level, coded UI tests can bring the same level of rapid automated testing capabilities to the UI layer.

This demo is based on an early build of Visual Studio Team System 2010 Beta 1.

Getting started with Pex in Visual Studio 2008

Nikolai Tillmann and Peli de Halleux give a short tutorial on Pex, an automated white box testing tool for .Net. The tutorial is a pair-programming session where they show us how to get started with Pex in Visual Studio, starting from an (untested) piece of C# code:

how to use Pex to explore the behavior of any method in your code,
how to save the exploration results into a unit test suite,
how to improve the generated parameterized unit tests to leverage Pex code exploration engine.

In this episode of geekSpeak, Steven Borg shares the merits of using Team Build 2008 to radically improve the quality of the code you write. Steven gives a great overview of how to set up automated builds and a build server, and the benefits of investing the time to do it right.

Steven also spends a bit of time talking about why he loves Test-Driven Development (TDD) - but pragmatically rather than zealously. Nonetheless, things like work items, build reports, logs and changesets available with Team Foundation Server can help developers zero in on bugs that "break the build". Breaking the build is bad, and we have a good chuckle about some of the stiff "penalties" that various development teams (even some within Microsoft) come up with for that infraction.

Also in this geekSpeak, get the scoop on what's on the horizon for setup and deployment projects, and hear about a great tool called WIX which makes building projects into MSI files super easy. Steven goes so far as to say that WIX actually changed the way he works, listen to him explain why.

Steven also gives tips on how many of you already have access to Team Foundation Server (and therefore, Team Build) and don't even know it. So it's easy to incorporate these tools into your software build process and, through the Continuous Integration they afford, drive up quality and enhance team involvement. As Steven says, it's like "a little bit of magic."
