Web Application Toolkit: Internet Explorer 8 Extensibility

Today users can access rich information and services while they are browsing a site; it's not a trivial task to expose this content to the same users when they are not on that site. The goal of this Web Application Toolkit is to leverage the new features in Internet Explorer 8 (Web Slices, Accelerators and Visual Search Providers) to extend the reach of your web site and services also to those users that are not on your site. The Web Application Toolkit includes a set of ASP.NET Web Controls that you can use to take advantage of these IE new features in your own Web application.

Nice flipping Silverlight Photo Module on MSN Korea

The MSN Korean team has added a new Silverlight Photo viewer on their main site. Its nice and subtle and rotates time-based or by mouse hover, bu there are two interesting details.

First, they "localized" the Silverlight install experience. In Korea, people are accustomed to ActiveX installation. If a user who doesn’t have the Silverlight runtime installed, they see the green install bar in IE.

They other detail is they've made the Photo Module available as a Web Slice. So you can quickly browse the photo in IE any time. Nicely done.

There are plenty of new things to talk about with Internet Explorer 8, and no time like the present since it’s officially released! In this screencast, we begin with a tour of the new consumer features from the relatively minor of tab groups and improved zooming through the major with tab process isolation, Accelerators, and WebSlices. Then, a brief but important look at standards and compatibility options every web developer should understand. Finally, there’s a look at new developer features including an in-depth look at the developer tools included with IE8 to help work with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Web Slices are a new IE8 feature that allows users to subscribe to some parts of a web page and receive updates automatically. In this screen cast, Zhiming Xue (Dr. “Z”), Microsoft Architect Evangelist, demonstrates through two simple examples how developers can easily create web applications that enable users to subscribe to select contents on a web page using the new IE8 feature, Web Slices. IE8: Web Slices

IE8 introduces Web Slices; a feature dreamt up by Jane Kim, Program Manager on the IE Team. WebSlices enable users to subscribe to specially marked content on a Web page. When the content changes, the user receives a notification on the Favorites Bar.You've met Jane before on Channel 9(watch that video to get a better idea of who she is and what the thinking was behind Web Slices). What's the state of Web Slices at Release Candidate quality? Anything new since Beta 1? Tune in.
