Hands on with Windows Live Movie Maker

As of today, Windows Live Movie Maker is officially out of beta and available to download for FREE as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite.

Victor Santodomingo, Windows Live Movie Maker Engine Development Lead, joined me in the studio to demonstrate the new Movie Maker in action and to discuss how his team developed a brand new engine that processes in 3D space to take advantage of Direct X capabilities and GPU effects.

Education Labs release Windows Live Moodle Plug-in

At OSCON today the Microsoft Eduation Labs group released a Windows Live services plug-in for the open source Moodle e-learning platform.

Kosar Jaff joined me in the studio for a demonstration of Moodle and a look at how his group incorporated Windows Live services into the Moodle environment.

As with Moodle, the Education Labs plug-in is entirely PHP based and open source.

Have you had a chance to see the Halo3 video trailers? Did you know they’re hosted on Silverlight Streaming by Windows Live?
Silverlight Streaming by Windows Live is a companion service for Silverlight that makes it easier for developers and designers to deliver and scale media-rich Silverlight applications.Catherine Heller sat down with Remy Pairault, Senior Program Manager for Silverlight Streaming, to discuss the new service and how it’s being used to host the new Halo3 video trailers. Lynn Ayres: What is Windows Live ID?

Windows Live ID (formerly known as Passport) is the identity and authentication system for Microsoft online services. Currently, over 380 million users have credentials that work with Windows Live ID. Windows Live ID Web Authentication is a new offering that enables you to add Windows Live ID authentication to your own Web site (details can be found here).

A while back, Catherine sat down with Lynn Ayres to discuss Windows Live ID developer offerings. The conversation starts out with Lynn describing how she got into software (turns out Lynn is an avid online gamer J), and then transitions to Windows Live ID around 00:03:17 and how it relates to Passport (00:04:19). Windows Live ID scenarios are discussed around 00:07:00.

Demos start at 00:08:32, and include other Windows Live developer offerings – like the Windows Live Contacts control and the Windows Live Spaces Photo control; the specific code that uses the new Web Authentication (an HTML iframe element) can be seen around 00:13:24; the Windows Live ID Client SDK is demonstrated around 00:16:05.

A few notes regarding changes that have occurred since this video was recorded:

· Windows Live ID Web Authentication has been released, and the documentation can be found here.

· The Windows Live ID Client SDK is still in alpha (you can learn more about the alpha refresh here) and will be released later this summer.

· In the Web Authentication demo (around 00:13:37), Lynn was accessing our integration/test environment (http://login.live-int.com). This functionality is now available in the production service and the URL should be modified accordingly (remove “-int” from the domain name: http://login.live.com)

· You can get an application ID for Web Authentication here. The connect.microsoft.com site Lynn referred to (around 00:14:13) was for the beta.

Windows Live Platform Discussion with Koji Kato and Danny Thorpe

Windows Live is best known as a collection of end-user offerings – like Messenger, Spaces, Search, Hotmail and a whole bunch more. It’s also in the process of evolving into a platform. Koji Kato and Danny Thorpe, from the Windows Live platform team, discuss their views on internet software and what it means to “componentize” Windows Live.

Koji sets some context by drawing an analogy to Office (00:02:27), and its early evolution from a set of end-user targeted apps to a set of components. Beta versions of the Windows Live Contacts Control and Spaces Photo Control (described by Danny around 00:11:37) represent some of the initial Windows Live components, and include customization plans (00:21:21), international/localization support (00:19:13), and support for multiple browsers (00:18:15).

Koji Kato is a Group Program Manager on the Windows Live platform team.

Danny Thorpe is Architect on the Windows Live platform team.
