Windows Media Workflow at Starz: Episode 1 of 3 - The Hardware

Starz Entertainment , the providers of premium TV channels like Starz and Encore and Vongo downloadable movies has built their entire media infrastructure around Windows Media. Stephen Smith, Director of Media System Integration walks us through the entire workflow and architecture of the system that they built.

This is a 3-part series, first showing the hardware, then the software that they built.

In this first part focusing on the hardware, Stephen takes Michael through different parts of the process where hardware from media encoders to satellites ingest, process, and transmit premium video content throughout North America.

このビデオでは、1/28の午後のロケで取材したイベントの様子をご覧いただけます。

表参道ヒルズの建物のあちこちにWindows Vista / 2007 Office systemのデビューをお知らせするサインが置かれました。

Microsoft Concierge Cafeは、マイクロソフト社員と直に接することができる場所で、多くのWindows Vista対応PCがおかれ、Windows Vistaと2007 Office systemに関心ある方々がたくさん集まりました。

展示ブースでは、日本国内に新しく登場するWindows Vista対応PCを用いて、
・写真
・音楽
・デジタルエンターテイメント
・使いやすさと信頼性
といったテーマでデモが行われていました。

このビデオの中におきましても、
・Windows Media Player 11とWindows Media対応携帯プレイヤーの連携
・Windows Media Center
・XBOX 360とWindows Media Centerとの連携
・デジカメとWindows Vistaとプリンタの連携
のデモをご覧いただけます。

ハイビジョンテレビに接続して使うPCやDLNA対応の機器と連携するPCが展示されており、家庭環境でのデジタルコンテンツの楽しみ方の広がりが垣間見れたイベントでもありました。

ロゴグッズショップも賑わいを見せ、抽選会場にもたくさんの人々がいらっしゃいました。

収録スケジュールの関係で、2007 Office systemを十分にカバーできませんでしたが、会場内ではOfficeの新機能に対するお客様の驚きや期待の声がたくさん聞こえておりました。

Shanen, a member of the Vista team from the beginning, takes me through a bunch of features in the Beta 2 release of Vista. We get to see event reporting, new policy management features, some IE security features, and a cool help option that actually handles doing the work for you.

Some entertainment features are also covered such as Media Center on a Tablet and the new URGE music service that works with Windows Media Player 11.

Over in building 50 there's a secret room. It's never been shown in public before. What is this room for? Testing audio devices. It is a special room where it's completely silent and the walls have been treated to minimize sound wave reflections. After giving us a tour Charlie Owen, PM on the Media Center team, gives us a little taste of Windows Vista's Media Center features and shows us how to build your first Media Center application. Great discussion of Xbox 360 and the latest in Media Center functionality. The Vista demo starts at about 19:00 into the video. The Web site we talk about is the Media Center Sandbox, which is where you can learn more.

How about a SAN for your music collection?

Microsoft has made some recent bets on storage management. That is good news for me for a variety of reasons. First, it offers a glimpse of my HDTV future. What? Yes, you read that correctly. I’ll get to the explanation in a little bit. Second, it means our customers will have a broader range of storage support in Microsoft products.

One of the recent acquisitions we made was from String Bean Software. We acquired their WinTarget iSCSI Target software. I don’t know all of the details of the contract so I can’t cite the terms. The acquisition brings some fascinating technology to the Windows platform. With any luck, we’ll see the iSCSI Target code show up in all of the Microsoft server products. I have my fingers crossed for a home server so I can record HDTV until the cows come home.

You might think that the Xbox 360 is only a game machine. But, here you'll learn it's a lot more than a game machine and that when you plug a Media Center and an Xbox 360 together you get a new kind of entertainment system.

Here, Jeff of the Xbox team, and David, of the Media Center team, tell you about their team's work and the future of media in your home.

If you already have a Media Center, you'll want to get the new Update Rollup 2, released yesterday. It lets you use your Media Center together with the Xbox 360.
