I sat down with them at Mix between sessions to understand what it takes to get video streamed live to the web to be played in Silverlight.

Stephen Smith, Director of Media System Integration walks us through the entire workflow and architecture of the system that they built.

This is a 3-part series, the software that they built.

In this second part focusing on the architecture, Stephen whiteboards out their entire media architecture that is based on a 200 terabyte SAN of Windows Media digital masters. Using Windows Workflow Foundation to automate the application of DirectShow filters to Windows Media files, Starz has built a media delivery pipeline that lets them create media in a variety of formats.

Silverlight: Creating Video with Timed Overlays

Building off the concept that Expression Media Encoder and Expression Blend 2 Preview together, demonstrating encoding a file with media markers and then using Silverlight to monitor when those markers are triggered, then perform some animation.

This technique can be useful when re-using media elements across advertising for example, but displaying different messaging, promotional offers, links, languages, or whatever.

展示ブースでは、日本国内に新しく登場するWindows Vista対応PCを用いて、

・デジタルエンターテイメント
・使いやすさと信頼性
といったテーマでデモが行われていました。

Shanen Boettcher shows off Vista Beta 2

Shanen, a member of the Vista team from the beginning, takes me through a bunch of features in the Beta 2 release of Vista. We get to see event reporting, new policy management features, some IE security features, and a cool help option that actually handles doing the work for you.

Some entertainment features are also covered such as Media Center on a Tablet and the new URGE music service that works with Windows Media Player 11.

It is a special room where it's completely silent and the walls have been treated to minimize sound wave reflections. After giving us a tour Charlie Owen, PM on the Media Center team, gives us a little taste of Windows Vista's Media Center features and shows us how to build your first Media Center application. Great discussion of Xbox 360 and the latest in Media Center functionality. The Vista demo starts at about 19:00 into the video. You might think that the Xbox 360 is only a game machine. But, here you'll learn it's a lot more than a game machine and that when you plug a Media Center and an Xbox 360 together you get a new kind of entertainment system.

Here, Jeff of the Xbox team, and David, of the Media Center team, tell you about their team's work and the future of media in your home.

If you already have a Media Center, you'll want to get the new Update Rollup 2, released yesterday. It lets you use your Media Center together with the Xbox 360.

Last month at the Consumer Electronics Show Bill Gates showed off the latest Windows Media Center.

But we still had a bunch of questions.

So, we headed over to building 50 to meet with John Canning and Charlie Owen. Sorry about the laugh, but John Canning started giving me a marketing pitch and we had to stop him.

Of course, the real question we wanted to know the answer to is:

"Why do I want a computer in the living room and how do I convince my wife that she wants a computer in the living room?"

We spend an hour, in two parts, talking everything about Media Center and the future of television and computers in the living room.
