"Magical" Kinect Demoed by Harry Potter Actors

Well that’s a good match! The actors who play the Weasley twins (James and Oliver Phelps) in the Harry Potter series of films, demonstrated the “magical” Xbox Kinect at the Gamescom event in Germany. The demo took place during Electronic Arts’ press conference
where the game maker was briefing the audience on their upcoming lineup, including a new Kinect-capable
Harry Potter game.

The new game is an adaptation of the upcoming movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) and it lets you perform spells with just your hands. For example, players can use stupefy,
expelliarmus, protego, windgardium leviosa, and others by moving their arms and hands in particular motions. (No actual magic wand is required).

For Harry Potter fans, this one’s going to be a must-have. For everyone else, there are plenty of other Kinect titles to choose from. You can keep track of the growing list

Xbox Kinect Goes on Tour

This summer, the Xbox Kinect is going on tour around the U.S. and Canada so shoppers can test it out themselves before it becomes available for sale on November 4th. This is great idea, I think, because despite all the raving reviews, I know there are a lot of people out there who are wondering “does this really work?” You just wave your arms and it sees you, no controller needed? Well, yes, that’s exactly right! And now you’ll get the chance to see for yourself.

Over the next 14 weeks, the tour will take the Xbox Kinect to 32 cities across North America – the full lineup of tour dates is here. In addition, Kinect will be in the Microsoft stores in Scottsdale, Arizona, Mission Viejo, CA, Denver and San Diego.

Photos and videos from the tour will be posted to a dedicated portal site at http://kinect.me so you can share your experience with friends, like on Facebook, for example. Or you can just visit that site to see others playing with the new console. (Right now, the page says “coming soon,” however).

For more info on Kinect and the coming tour, you can also check out http://www.xbox.com/kinect and http://www.facebook.com/kinect.

Hulu Coming to Xbox 360

By now, you probably heard the news that Hulu has finally unveiled its new subscription-based service called Hulu Plus. But in case you missed the details, it’s worth mentioning that one of the ways you’ll be able to enjoy this service in the near future is via your Xbox 360. That’s right - Microsoft is partnering with Hulu to provide a native, customized experience for watching Hulu right from your Xbox. The full service won’t be available until 2011, though. It will also require an Xbox LIVE Gold membership.

But I have a little secret for you: you don’t have to wait until 2011 to watch Hulu on your Xbox. There are several ways Media Center users can gain access to Hulu right now. It’s been awhile since I last tested these (posted here), but the one I liked the best was PlayOn, which still supports Hulu, Netflix, CBS, YouTube and more. It’s kind of pricey though – $39.99 for the first year and then $19.99 afterwards. But as a “cancel your cable” alternative, it’s an investment worth making since its yearly price is comparable to what many pay monthly for their cable TV.

The New Xbox: What You Need to Know

In case you missed it, the new Xbox 360 has been announced and is now available for pre-order via Amazon.com. The updated console isn’t just prettier on the outside (although it is, with the new sleek and shiny black casing), it’s all new-and-improved on the inside too.

The updated console is slimmer, contains a 250 GB removable hard drive and built-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi N. Even better than that, the console is being described as “whisper quiet.” (That feature alone makes it worth the upgrade, right? Our current Xbox sure likes to make its presence known.)

The updated console sells for $299.99 – the same price as the current Xbox, despite all the improvements. Major Nelson posted pics to flickr which show off the console from multiple angles…including the back (here) where you can spot the port layout.

Other specs include: a new custom Kinect-ready port (on older Xboxes, Kinect will work via USB), 5 USB ports (2 on front, 3 in back), touch-sensitive buttons (swipe your finger to activate on/off and eject), an AV cable, HDMI port, optical audio out port, a smaller, more efficient power supply cable, included all-black wireless controller, 45 nanometer & integrated CPU and GPU and a single fan (down from 2) for quieter sound.

Plus, check out Engadget’s unboxing of the console here.

Natal is Kinect! Games Announced, Too

On June 13th at the E3 gaming conference, Microsoft revealed, among much spectacle, Project Natal, which shall now be known under its official name, “Kinect.” The new gaming system, which will arrive as a separate controller for Xbox 360 systems, lets you play video games controller-free. Kincet can tell who’s playing as opposed to who’s just passing by and it can identify voices and faces.

The Kinect add-on consists of a camera, audio sensors, and motion-sensing technology that tracks 48 points of movement on the human body.
E3 on MTV

Can’t make it to the upcoming video game mecca that is the E3 Expo 2010? Not to worry, MTV Networks has you covered. According to this recent announcement, MTV is partnering with Microsoft to deliver coverage of the event’s key moments, including the premiere of Project Natal, the innovative controller-free add-on for Xbox 360.

MTV properties will also cover Xbox 360 game announcements, world premieres and other breaking news throughout the conference.

But wait, it gets even better: Cirque du Soleil will be there too, turning E3’s media circus into a real one. Apparently, the Cirque du Soleil performers will be helping to introduce Natal, which captures body motions via sensors and a camera and translates those into in-game actions. <itunes:summary> Can’t make it to the upcoming video game mecca that is the E3 Expo 2010? That should be interesting! On Monday June 14th, Spike TV will cover E3 media briefings and game launches live at 10:30 AM PDT. On Tuesday, June 15th, MTV will cover Natal’s launch starting at 12:30 PM PDT.
Using Xbox 360s in Hospitals

We’ve already heard about some less-than-typical use cases for the Xbox 360 when New York state announced they would test the units for use as emergency alert systems. Now, here comes another bold idea: Xbox as a tool to feed medical records to in-room displays. Microsoft Researchers are looking into the devices’ potential for use in this area, with senior researcher Desney Tan leading the way. The gaming machines could be used by patients for entertainment purposes (as they already are sometimes today), but they could also be used in lieu of PCs when doctors needed to access the medical records of the patient. Imagine: the doctor walks in the room and pulls up a patient’s scans using the Xbox 360! The benefit to using the Xbox instead of a PC is primarily cost – at $199 per unit, the machine is cheaper than a netbook and definitely cheaper than a standard PC such those used in hospitals and doctors offices today.

Nick Baker: Xbox Architecture

Nick Baker is General Manager for Xbox Architectural Design. After graduating from Imperial College London in 1990, he found his way to Apple and worked on the team that tried to create a specialized video card. He then went to 3DO where he worked on their
high-end gaming system, which unfortunately failed in the market.

In 1997 he joined Microsoft to work in the WebTV team on their next generation set-top-box known as UltimateTV. It was during this time that Microsoft’s Xbox was entering its initial design phase, and because Nick and his team had already done some research
at adding game-play capabilities to UltimateTV they provided some useful guidance on the first Xbox hardware design. Nick’s assistance with the initial Xbox design was seen as pivotal enough, that in 2002 he was asked to head up the team that would design
the next generation hardware, which would eventually become known as the XBOX 360. It is there, that Nick Baker finds himself to this day, working hard at fine tuning the design of the system, its costs, and its performance.
