A Camera that Records your Whole Life

Originally a Microsoft Research project designed to help those with Alzheimer’s disease, the wearable SenseCam camera is now going into production. This small camera, created by researchers at the Cambridge Lab, is worn on a lanyard around the neck and takes photos whenever movement is spotted or a person approaches. To do so, the camera uses its built-in sensors that can detect changes in light, movement, temperature, and proximity to others.

Now a company called Vicon has licensed the production rights from Microsoft and plan to launch the camera as the “Vicon Revue.” No longer just for Alzheimer’s patients looking to jog their memory (remarkably, that actually works!), the Revue will soon be marketed to “lifebloggers” who want to document their everyday activity.

The camera has 1 GB of storage which is enough to hold around 30,000 of its geo-tagged low-res images. To see the prototype in action, check out this video here.

I love remote controls! I love cameras! Therefore, I loved meeting with Troll Systems. Now all in HD, these sealed and pressurized units are built strong to hold up against any storm or fly attached to the bottom of a helicopter. The device is then controlled remotely from your office or studio to give you a spy-tech, birds-eye, top secret view of anywhere in the world. Love it.

New Video Series Shows the Tech in Virtual Earth

There’s a new video series available on our sister site, Channel 9, that delves into the tech behind Virtual Earth. The series is called “Behind the Maps,” and it will show you how the data and imagery in Virtual Earth goes through the whole process from camera to web and beyond. You’ll learn about the high-resolution cameras used – like the incredible UltraCam, how imagery is captured from a plane, how imagery is processed, and more. Of course, you’ll get to learn more about the Virtual Earth platform itself and its 3D control that delivers the imagery to your browser window. The first video is up now and will feature an up-close look at the UltraCam – check it out!

Welcome to the very first episode of ShutterSpeed the Channel 10 Digital Photography and Imaging Show.

On each episode of ShutterSpeed we'll help you understand your camera gear so that you can take better photos and show you new and cool ways to edit, share and display your images.

In this first episode Tim Grey, Michael Palermiti & Bill Crow join me in the studio to discuss online video storage and photo editing tools. We also get back to basics and talk about the principles of photography and what to look for in a digital camera.

I also visit the home studio of award winning photographer Phil Borges. Phil shows me the equipment he uses in the field - including his home-made lighting rig - and talks about some of the techniques he uses to capture his magnificent portraits.

Yes, in fact, he DID say dodecahedron! The whiz kids over at Immersive Media have created a camera that records omnidirectional video. What's that? Well, omnidirectional digital video captures a full-motion spherical world, simultaneously in every direction. I could explain it further but it's easier for you to just watch the video Then- head on over to their site and take the immersive challenge. I can't wait till they team up with Z-Dome and Virtual Earth!

What's going on in Open Space at MIX?

In this video, Josh Holmes points out some of the sessions being submitted to the Open Space schedule board. He also shows off the cameras we're using to record content in the Open Space area.

If you have an idea for an Open Space session, get over to the Sandbox and get it submitted on the schedule board. Just because you submit the topic, doesn't mean you need to be the expert.

Also, remember you don't need to submit a session to use the cameras. You can record any impromptu conversation, do a quick interview or a whiteboard session in the chat areas.

Capturing Your Creativity

In the Open Space area of the Sandbox, we will be providing plenty of ways for you to capture your creativity and give you an outlet for your ideas. For one, we're going to be lending out video cameras to attendees to do impromptu discussions and interviews in the Sandbox. We'll also have a video camera capturing the sessions going on in the Open Space Theatre. These will be posted back here on the Open Space at MIX blog. This is attendee content, captured at MIX, broadcasted to the world.

Another way we're capturing your creativity is in the whiteboards. Yes, a very low-tech way to get your ideas down in a drawing. We'll have a digital camera ready to take pictures of your whiteboard creations, clean them up with some whiteboard software and then post them to flickr.

Here's an example of a before and after shot of the whiteboard capturing process:

If you have an idea you want to express to the world, or you just finished a great whiteboard diagram in an Open Space at MIX session, then drop by the Open Space at MIX table and borrow a digital camera. We'll do the clean-up work and post the whiteboard to flickr.

Teleprompters....putting the words right in my mouth

I'm going to be honest with you guys- the Teleprompter is one of my favorite inventions ever. Don't get me wrong, it's not always easy to make it appear as though you are not reading to the audience at home but once you've got it down it makes a world of difference. The problem has been that teleprompter cameras are expensive, bulky and time consuming to program- but not any more. Watch this clip and check out the first truly portable and SUPER simple teleprompter.

Upload Photos from Your Camera to the Web

The Eye-Fi Card is a breakthrough new product that everyone with a digital camera needs to know about. It's a 2GB SD card and wireless memory card that automatically uploads pictures from your digital camera or PC directly to the photo sharing site, photo printing site, blog, or social network of your choice. The Eye-Fi Card stores pictures like a regular SD card, up to 2 GB, and then uploads your photos automatically as soon as you return to your home network (or any open Wi-Fi network that doesn't require a login via an initial splash screen webpage...like Starbucks). Amazingly, the card already works with a myriad of services, including Kodak, Walmart, Snapfish, Photobucket, Facebook, Webshots, Phanfare, Shutterfly, flickr, TypePad, Vox, Sharpcast, and many more.

Through a sea of high-definition tv's at CES, I spied the Jasco booth with an interesting selection of home security devices on display including a solar powered camera that you can put outside your house without running a power line to it. Is it worth $300 to tell whether your late-night visitor is carrying a Papa John's box or an axe? I think so.

Hola world. I’m Scott and I’ve been helping to develop some of the pieces for 10. This is my first ‘on screen’ appearance though and I hope you find something you like here.

The basis of the piece was really straight forward. I wanted to go shopping for a point and shoot camera with someone who could help me evaluate what I would find. I’ve wanted a new camera since last Christmas’ blurry mementos and knew I could use some help. So, with a hidden camera, a guy who should know and a too cheap microphone, I went out and got one. And to the Tina and Laura fanboys – relax, they’ll be back tomorrow.
