Is 2011 The Year That DLNA Kills the Printer Driver?

One of the most frustrating aspects of setting up a printer is the need to download and install a huge driver file to get the device talking to your PC. I’m not sure just what the printer manufacturers are packing in there, but 100MB+ downloads aren’t the most fun when you simply want to print a page of A4 text.

Fortunately, next year may well see more manufacturers dropping the printer driver. Last week, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) announced that there was a 200 percent increase in DLNA certified printers released in 2010. The DLNA networking standard ensures interoperability between devices from different manufacturers – whilst traditionally that’s meant more for media streaming than other areas of networking, it seems as if the manufacturers are starting to develop certified products across other categories.

In the realms of printing, that means the end of the printer driver – digital camera X is able to transfer photos directly to printer Y without the need to copy the file to a PC first. With IDC estimating that the size of the “digital universe” will be 44 times larger in 2020 than 2009, it’s good to hear that someone’s figuring out an easier way to get our files transferred between devices much more easily than today.

Before you hit delete on that printer driver, a little perspective. The quoted 200% increase in real terms is an increase from 14 models launched in 2009 to 40 models in 2010 from the likes of HP, Samsung and Epson. But for sure, we’re likely to see that number grow exponentially next year and beyond, saving the world a whole heap of bandwidth. DLNA Printing – definitely a trend to check out at CES next month.

Image credit: PC Magazine</itunes:summary>

Leaf Networks: 'Consumer' VPNs

What if you could share not just selected files and folders, but your entire network with a group of trusted friends? Leaf Networks software lets you do just that. The Leaf Networks software establishes a connection between your network and those of your friends, allowing the sharing of network-attached devices, PCs, even game consoles and Tivos, and all the content that resides upon them. It's not "all-or-nothing" sharing, though. Leaf users can choose whether or not they want to share drives or folders with others. It's similar to a VPN, but if you want to get technical, Jeff Capone, the company's founder and chief executive explains,"It's not quite a VPN, but more like an Internet-based bridge between networks." I say it's like home networking on the WAN (wide-area network) level.

During the program's beta, 25,000 users signed up to test it out and now that the service has officially launched, it's available as a free download to anyone. With Leaf Networks software installed, you can access your friend's music, pictures, and movies and play them on your digital media center (like Windows Media Center), just as if their PC physically resided on your own home network. You can even set up game sharing for your Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles.

To use the software, you first download the client to your PC. The user interface asks you to pick a username and password, and then add either the email or username of a friend. If the other person is online during the setup, you can use the IM-like window that appears so you and your friend can verify each other's authenticity and discuss what you're sharing via a chat. Once the network is established, each person picks what folders, drives, or servers are being shared. An important final step for each person is to make sure the app is permitted for use in by their anti-virus software and made "trusted" by their firewall programs.

Microsoft Research TechFest - Using P2P to speed up multiplayer gaming (and other things)

Had some technical difficulties with posting this video yesterday, but we seem to be back online and working.

That's a good thing - this another video in the
TechFest series, but it isn't especially business oriented.

Imagine if part of your job was to learn how to play Quake III.

Yeah.

Now imagine that part of your job was to improve Quake III's networking to the point that you could potentially have a game with hundreds of players rather than just sixteen or so.

That's what these guys are doing.

The technology, of course, isn't confined to Quake III. That's just the testing ground. It was an easy choice because the source for Quake III is freely available.

In the end, despite the emphasis on game playing, the subject here is really optimization of P2P networking, and an amazing job was done here.

I'll be back on Monday to post another video in this series, and you really, really won't want to miss it. I'm not going to get into any details here, but it's something pretty special. It'll improve your Monday, anyway
