If you’ve never heard of this tool before, it’s pretty impressive. Basically, it’s the technology that’s used “under the hood” in Windows Live Photo Gallery to stitch photos together in order to create panoramic images. But it does more than that, too. ICE also lets you change the orientation of a photo to give the impression a tilt/shift lens was used, set the midpoint of a 360-degree panorama, or use a prospective projection with your images instead of a cylindrical one. (For what this all means, check out the Windows Live Photo & Video blog post about ICE).

You can also export your ICE images to Deep Zoom and HD View and there’s an ICE add-in for use in Photo Gallery.

Now, with the new update to ICE, it supports a “Publish to Photosynth” option. This lets you send your full-resolution panoramas to the Microsoft Photosynth website, which has also been updated to accommodate the new, wider imagery. Look for the new “Expand/Contract Viewer” button to the right of the plus sign in the Photosynth controls.

A point in the point cloud means that a specific feature has been identified in two or more photos, allowing for Photosynth
to determine to some degree where in space that point exists. While a good Photosynth might have 100% synthiness, meaning all the pictures are connected, it doesn't necessarily mean there will be lots of points in the point cloud.

State of the Union Gets Synthed

MSNBC is hosting a cool photosynth of President Obama’s State of the Union address over on their website. The 3D photo, created using Microsoft Photosynth technology, lets you zoom around the House of Representatives where speech took place on Wednesday January 27th. If you’ve never had the opportunity to visit the Capital building in person, this is a great way to explore the chambers up close. In fact, you can probably get closer viewing the synth than you could actually get in person, especially considering how deep you can zoom in on architectural elements like the clock above the presidential podium, for example.

You can also put this particular synth in “slideshow” mode to see time-lapsed photos of the speech in progress. Just click the play button at the top-right.

How to Photosynth a Car

The North American International Auto Show started this week, and one of the things I'm sure we'd all like to see is incredible Photosynths of cars.
Photosynth Updated with New Release and New UI

A post on the Photosynth blog reveals that the popular 3D imagery tool has been updated to a new release. The most notable changes in this update are performance improvements and new controls.

The speed of the imagery download when you zoom has now been improved in this release so images resolve faster when you zoom in to see the details. Also, Photosynth’s UI now has cleaner, more usable controls. All the controls for navigating through images are still present, plus there’s a navigation disk control in the middle – they’ve just been made over with a new UI.

The view control is the biggest change, however. Now when you hover over the “view” button (2nd from the right, above), you’ll get a pop-up that gives you quick access to the other ways you can view a synth including the normal 3D (synth) view, Overhead view, the 2D photo grid, and the Point Cloud only view. (See image on left).

While these changes are relatively minor, they go a long way to improving the look and feel of Photosynth, making it a lot more fun to use and easier to understand for newcomers too.

</itunes:summary>

Photosynth Updated: New Overhead View and Other Improvments

Photosynth has just been updated to include a major new feature called “Overhead View.” What this feature offers is the ability to look down on the image you’re viewing as if you were floating over the top of the scene. To enable this feature, Photosynth calculates a “cloud” of 3D points that represent the features matched between the photos, the team explains in their blog post about the update.

Not only does Overhead View provide you with a different perspective on what you’re viewing, you can also navigate to other parts of the synth via this view, too. Simply hover your mouse over the part of the scene you want to visit and you’ll be shown a thumbnail from that region. Click the thumbnail and you’ll immediately transition to that part of the synth.

The other updates in this new release of Photosynth have mostly taken place behind the scenes. They include a new Silverlight 3-based viewer, easier geotagging, better multiword search (in the team’s own words, it “no longer sucks”), and when you click the “view” button on the synther you’re automatically logged into the site and taken directly to the editor.

You can see the new Overhead View in action in this video here on Vimeo.

WWT and Photosynth Make Best Websites of 2009 List

Although the year isn’t over yet, TIME Magazine has already put out their list of the best websites of 2009.
Anandan Talks About Digital Heritage Project

P. Anandan, who leads Microsoft Research in India, stopped by to show us a project they worked on called the India Digital Heritage Project. This was a very cool attempt to recreate the experience of visiting historic sites around India through the combined use of Photosynth, HD View, video, and ambient sound. While much of the presentation is 'on rails' like a theme park tour, just like with World Wide Telescope you can stop the tour at any time and wander off clicking and zooming and looking at the sites, and then click to jump right back into the tour. It's a very interesting example of what's possible with tools available today.
