Creating Widgets for Silverlight

Apurva, Web Developer Evangelist of Microsoft Singapore tells us of a sample "widget" application showcasing how a concept of a widget can be taken to allow end-users to get upto speed on creating/using reusable elements and hence cutting down development time.

Widget is a whole unit that contains the user interface and the business logic that makes the widget work. The developer creates the widget in a way that will allow his/her end-user to simply set bunch of properties and get the widget to do what it is supposed to do. Software developers could also look at creating and selling such widgets allowing them additional revenue stream. The idea is similar to creating custom controls but is probably a newer way to look at how resuable components could be created.

You can download the proof-of-concept sample code and make changes to it/enhance it as you see fit. Even better still would be to create you own widgets and share them with the Silverlight community.

Some other ideas for widgets (e-Learning) like: Drag-Drop, Multiple Answers, Crossword puzzles, …..

Here in Singapore, we started a LAMP2WIMP project team. Focus, to help PHP application owners realize that Windows Server 2008, IIS7 can be an option for them when running PHP applications.

In this video, we interviewed Tian Yan, founder of Tyler Projects on the benchmark exercise which we did here in MIC Singapore. Windows 2008 in this benchmark, beats both centos and fedora.

Schools Near Me - Virtual Earth

In Singapore’s Microsoft Innovation Centre, we have been innovating on Virtual Earth. In this quick chat, I caught up with Alvin Poh, to find out what innovation he has been working on. Dubbed “Schools Near Me”, the application allows us to use a Postal Code, retrieve a set of GPS coordinates and pulls a map from Virtual Earth and overlay data onto the map to provide meaningful services and information. As the name suggests, this applications allows us to find all the schools around where I stay.

Developing your first Virtual Earth application

During this week's MSDN TechTalks, Chewy showed a 15 min demo where I built a website from scratch that allows the user to type in their Singapore postal code and a Singapore map shows up with a pin on top of the postal code (every postal code represent a distinct building unlike others where the code can specify a geographical region).

This demo has resonated quite well with the attendees at the event. A number of them wanted to see the code so they can build a "here are my stores" map and embedded into their web sites. As such, I just recorded a video of me doing the exact same demo but with more commentary of my code. Here's Chewy's video and a copy of the resulting code from the video demo.

Code

The Postal2Gps web service used is a web service we built to wrap a raw JSP service from Best.SG. You need to sign up for a developer ID from Best.SG to make use of their service. The web service wrapper we used will be updated by the end of Oct to allow you to type in your own developer ID.

Singapore's First "SideShow" Gadget on the ASUS WP5e

We got our hands on an ASUS W5Fe with the new built-in "SideShow" device and we were curious to see who in Singapore can be the first to build a SideShow app. Well, our friends at Advanced Interactive Technologies (AIT) took up the challenge and as of this video, they are the FIRST IN SINGAPORE (and probably all of SE Asia) to build an app on a SideShow device.

In this video, KC Chung (Developer at AIT) and Chewy Chong (Developer Evangelist) checks out the Singapore Weather SideShow gadget which allows us to check the weather from the NEA through the SideShow device without the computer to be on. KC also provides a “how to get started” document plus all his source code for you to start building on the SideShow device.

You don’t need a physical device as the SideShow SDK includes an emulator and it is surprisingly easy to get started. Make sure you check out KC’s notes on how you can get started on SideShow!
