Hulu Coming to Xbox 360

By now, you probably heard the news that Hulu has finally unveiled its new subscription-based service called Hulu Plus. But in case you missed the details, it’s worth mentioning that one of the ways you’ll be able to enjoy this service in the near future is via your Xbox 360. That’s right - Microsoft is partnering with Hulu to provide a native, customized experience for watching Hulu right from your Xbox. The full service won’t be available until 2011, though. It will also require an Xbox LIVE Gold membership.

But I have a little secret for you: you don’t have to wait until 2011 to watch Hulu on your Xbox. There are several ways Media Center users can gain access to Hulu right now. It’s been awhile since I last tested these (posted here), but the one I liked the best was PlayOn, which still supports Hulu, Netflix, CBS, YouTube and more. It’s kind of pricey though – $39.99 for the first year and then $19.99 afterwards. But as a “cancel your cable” alternative, it’s an investment worth making since its yearly price is comparable to what many pay monthly for their cable TV.

Windows PCs on TV Shows

With the launch of Windows 7, people have been on the lookout for Windows computers making appearances on TV shows as a part of the company’s promotional efforts at marketing the new OS.

Blogger Long Zheng just noticed that a Windows 7 computer made a (hilarious) appearance on NBC’s 30 Rock where the writers use it to try and design a new microwave oven and, after adding multiple doors and wheels among other things, found that they had ended up designing a car instead.

On another show, stylistas may have noticed that the Bing campaign promo spots interspersed in Bravo’s Rachel Zoe project showed Rachel and her assistant using custom-branded Windows PCs. Mainly because Apple has, until now, been the go-to company for product placements within TV shows. Anytime you see that logo, you know that deals have been made. Whether or not the company pays for product placement is unknown, but since they claim they do not, it’s likely they just donate the hardware. Through Apple’s product placements, the subtle message seems to be that everyone uses Macs – even those in corporate environments where you know that if this was the real world, there would be Windows PCs connected to an Active Directory managed domain. Case in point – an Apple PC makes an appearance on House, a show that takes place in a hospital – a site where normally finding a Mac is still quite the rarity. Or, as one blogger recently put it, “finding a Mac [in a hospital] is about as rare as finding a vegetarian at Outback Steakhouse.”

That being said, I hope there will be more efforts to balance out the product placements in the future to give some equal time to Windows, especially now that there’s a shiny new OS that’s worth showing off.

Image credit: 30 Rock via IStartedSomething.com

The Hulu Plugins Just Keep Coming!

You know something’s a hit when you just can’t stop hearing about it. Such is the case with Hulu, the online site where U.S. users (sorry, world!) can watching popular television programs for free. Since Hulu is a web service, we’ve started to see many different ways which people are integrating Hulu with their Media Center PCs including the new PlayOn plugin, the XBMC plugin for Hulu, the upcoming software from Boxee, and soon-to-launch plugin from SecondRun.tv.

But still there’s more coming. The latest tip comes from The Media Center Blog, where we learn that the beta version of the TunerFree MCE plugin delivers Hulu to Media Center, too. Why choose this one over the others? Well since developer Martin Millmore is in the UK, his plugin also offers some of the best British IPTV content, including BBC News, ITV, Channel 4 and 5.
Hulu Coming Soon to Media Center via SecondRun.tv

Forget paying $30 for PlayOn, if all you want is Hulu on your Media Center PC, it looks like there will be yet another option soon. A new third party extension called SecondRun.tv is coming soon which will let you browse and watch Hulu video on any machine that runs Windows Vista Media Center. According the developer, the plugin is already fully functional, he’s just ironing out a few kinks. He also noted that he plans on testing it on Windows 7 and media center extenders, as the goal is for it to work on extenders (He has 2 Xbox 360’s, so you know he’s motivated!). He said that it will probably work on extenders now, though.

To find out when it gets released, keep checking the http://www.secondrun.tv site – it looks like it will be very soon.
Stream Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and More to Your Xbox 360

A Windows utility called PlayOn has just left its beta phase and is now available for everyone to try. With this installed, you can stream video from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, as well as video from TV networks like CBS, CNN, and ESPN right to your Xbox 360. Of course, if you’re primarily interested in Netflix, there’s no need to get a special utility – the recent update to Xbox adds Netflix streaming as an option on the dashboard. However, being able to stream from Hulu and YouTube is the sort of thing that makes you sit up and take notice.

To use PlayOn, you just install the software to any networked XP or Vista machine (they don’t specifically say “Windows 7” but I’m going to give it a shot this weekend – let me know if I shouldn’t!). The software, once installed behaves as a DLNA/UPnP media server and browser that pulls RSS feeds from content providers, and presents them to DLNA-compliant networked media devices. In other words, the PC software pulls in the media streams from the web sites and services and then sends them over your home network to your Xbox.

The only downside to PlayOn is that it’s not free – after a 14-day trial, you can purchase the program for $30.00. A little steep for these budget-conscious times, especially considering that there’s already a free plug-in for Hulu (install XBMC plus the XBMC plug-in for Hulu) and Xbox already does Netflix. That means you’re paying mostly for YouTube and the miscellaneous TV networks. That may or may not be worth $30 to you – it’s a personal decision. However, there is something to be said for having it all in one easy-to-manage software package. And at least the $30 is a one-time fee. <itunes:summary> A Windows utility called PlayOn has just left its beta phase and is now available for everyone to try. Hmmm, maybe I just talked myself into it. This is something that no other smartphones are capable of doing, notes Adam Lein of pocketnow.com. Instead of buying expensive videos and TV programs, you can sync your Windows Mobile device with any PC running Windows Media Center (Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate users – this includes you). To do so, all you need to do is set up your Media Center PC with a TV tuner so it can act as a DVR, recording your favorite shows to its hard drive for later viewing in the Media Center application. TV tuner kits are usually around $100 and can plug into the USB port on your computer.

Once your PC is set up to record TV, go to Tasks –> Sync in Windows Media Center to set up syncing with your Windows Mobile Device.
Coming Soon: Premium Channels on Media Center PCs

Recently, Microsoft announced a new platform that will permit the manufacturers of media center PCs the ability to support “premium” channels on their devices. These channels have been difficult to get access to in the past due the the TV industry’s requirements that they are covered by copy protection technology. The Microsoft platform called Protected Broadcast Driver Architecture (PBDA) extends the previous Architecture known as Broadcast Driver Architecture (BDA), which has been in use since Windows 98. PBDA, in development since 2005, was recently delivered as a part of the new Windows Media Center TV Pack, which made the software available to Media Center PCs. Now, all that’s needed is for manufacturers to build and ship PBDA-compatible cards. Two manufacturers overseas have already stepped up to the plate (Happague and AverMedia) and Microsoft believes that pay TV reception over-the-air will be possible by 2009. (Image credit: Windows Vista Blog)

Video-1 for the Tivo, Video-2 for the HD content, Video-3 for the Xbox, etc. For the all the happy proliferation of digital toys in our lives, we always end up craving consolidation (termed by the jargon demagogues as 'convergence').

Beginning on the 22nd of this month, which just happens to be its birthday, your Xbox 360 will offer feature film and television downloads. Through the cunning use of the Live Marketplace and your Microsoft Points, you'll be able to subscribe to television shows like CSI: Miami and Robot Chicken.
Disney-ABC President Anne Sweeney understands piracy, "serves a need..."

We’ve all been witness to the disconnect between the people and their leadership, and nowhere is this divide more apparent than between Internet users and content providers.
