Read-only Error with WDS & MS Word Files

This maybe related to previous wiki titled "Multiple WDS Indexers pointing at a network share causes file sharing violations”.....
Windows desktop search 02.06.5000.5378 gets installed when installing SolidWorks 2007 (popular CAD software). When telling WDS to index a UNC path & all indexing is complete. Opening modifying & saving a word doc a few times (between 1 - 10 times repeatedly) to this UNC path can cause your modified word 2000 or 2003 file to suddenly become read-only & the user is forced to as SaveAs & change the filename in order to not loose their work. This happens when:

		  1. You’re the only one indexing this location & you have “prioritize indexing” enabled & you modify & save a word doc a few times…. or
		  2. Multiple machines without “prioritize indexing” turned on index the same UNC location & a few of them are idle & start indexing while users are saving word docs. Obviously this one is the bigger problem & compounds itself the more machines out there.

Is this a known issue? Any workaround for this while we wait for updates? I found this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927018/en-us — but it seems confusing & offers no solution. Basically with WDS installed on multiple boxes, it’s impossible to use word across a network... any thoughts?

Duplicate "Duration" columns in music search view

In the WDS search window click "Music" and you can see two identical "Duration" column. I have no idea if this is a bug or the two actually serve different purpose.

Multiple WDS Indexers pointing at a network share causes file sharing violations

Let's say User1 begins to save a 30MB Excel file. The save time is about 35 seconds. When saving, Excel builds a randomly named temp file that has no file extension (something like E95600F). When the temp file is finished saving it's renamed back to original file name. The problem I've encoutered is the WDS Indexer on User2, User3, User4, etc... would start to index the TEMP file (assuming these user machines are idle). The first indexer to begin indexing the file would put a read/write lock on the file and when Excel (on User1's machine) is done building the temp file and needs to rename it, an "Application Sharing Violation" error is thrown. The error usually says something like "User2 has the file open" (refering to the WDS client on User2's machine).

This is the kind of problem virus scanners and Windows Explorer in details view used cause: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814112
A way to tell WDS to leave all temp files alone would solve the problem.

F11 (Fullscreen) removes all tabs when returning to normal view

It seems that not only does the new MSN tab strip not appear in full screen mode (can't find a setting to change this) but when you return to regular view all tabs except the tab that was active when going into full screen mode disappear.

Freezing dialogs

After installing the Desktop Search, certain dialogs such as Internet Options and Taskbar and Start Menu Properties freeze when Apply or OK is pressed, requiring the explorer/iexplore process to be killed. After uninstalling Desktop Search and rebooting, the problem disappears.

Missing Results

I'm running the released version. It shows indexing completed. I ran a contact search. I index a public folder with 32,000 contacts as well as a local address book. MSN search is showing about 10 fewer matches than X1. All of the missing matches are in the public folder.

Options Window Disabled

In my installation version 2214, the options page for 'Desktop Search' is completely disabled and has a Message in bold at the bottom which says: "Windows Desktop Search chould not be started. Please reinstall and restart Desktop Search".

I've tried reinstalling the thing about 4 times, and removing all the registry entry and all traces of it from the system, yet to no avail. The search is working though. It indexes all the default locations, which is My documents and my outlook 2003 mail. However I cannot change any of the settings and hence I cannot change the locations which need to be searched.

Has any one been able to reproduce this bug? Is there a solution?

I have. There's quite a few on the newsgroup who have the same exact problem. nothing seems to fix it

Try the Windows enabler program at http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/speedload/index.html for a partial work around to the problem. That will enbale you to click on greyed out options. The text boxes however require a lot of skill to get anything added to them, but this will work for any other control - LordDaMan

Update: Supposedly the latest version (02.05.0000.1082) fixes this problem - can anyone else confirm this? -- JonathanHardwick

Outlook 2000/2003 crashes when receiving emails, deleting, moving.....

Last release crashes Outlook 2k on Windows 2k every time some mail "moves" between folders: receiving, moving, deleting. No change after a repair and reinstall of both Outlook and search.

Similar behavior may also occur in Outlook 2003 (up to and including Service Pack 2) on Windows XP SP2. The workaround listed below under Outlook crashes upon exiting provides a fix for the crashing issues at the expense of the toolbar no longer being available in Outlook.

Outlook crashes upon exiting

With Outlook 2000 (all updates installed), Windows XP SP2, and Desktop Search build 2214, Outlook always crashes when I exit Outlook. This happens whether or not the MSN Search Toolbar is enabled in Outlook. Outlook is configured with Internet Email, so the toolbar cannot index my mail or contacts anyway. I can eliminate the crashing by deleting or renaming this registry key:
		  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\MSNToolbarOutlook.Connect

- Catatonic

I've just upgraded my brother's PC to Windows XP+SP2. He has Outlook 2000 - and now it does the same: always crashes on exit. Thanks for the registry key workaround (but I thought that even with Internet Mail, Desktop Search should be indexing the PST files?) -- GeoffC

Property Search gives matches that are not in the specified property

If you use the syntax "XYZ:SomeText" to search for the string "SomeText" in the field "XYZ", you get matches on "SomeText" that do not occur in the field "XYZ". This is especially evident using the example HTML filter extension in the indexing SDK.

Property Search on a bogus property gives no feedback to user that the property is invalid

If you use the syntax "XYZ:SomeText" and there is no such property "XYZ", shouldn't the user be given some feedback that WDS doesn't know anything about that property? Now it just seems to ignore the fact that the search was suppose to be constrained and does a search on all text.

Some search patterns not working correctly

If have some files with the name "Gehaltsabrechnung YYYY-MM.tif", i.e Gehaltsabrechnung 2005-01.tif or Gehaltsabrechnung 2004-10.tif. The files are shown in the Windows Desktop Search Results when I type the following search patterns: "Gehaltsabrech", "Gehaltsabrechnun". They are not found when I type "Gehaltsabrechnung". The window that shows the results while typing the search pattern shows the files correctly but the "Windows Desktop Search Results" only shows "Nothing found in All locations for query "Gehaltsabrechnung". It looks like a bug. I am using Windows Desktop Search Version 02.01.0000.2214. Curiously " "Gehaltsabrechnung" " in quotation marks can be found. jirzi

Update: 02.05.0000.1082 now has a German version. Does this fix the problem for you? -- JonathanHardwick

Toolbar Options - Desktop Search - Advanced - Reading Pane - Preview attachments problem

I wanted to find out whether pdf as file extension works. It did not and even after deleting pdf from the edit box and pc reboot I had from now on the problem that when highlighting a pdf document in the search results the Acrobat Reader started with the highlghted pdf document. What helped was deleting this entry from the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RSSearch\ContentIndexCommon\Previewers\Extension\.pdf @="{015CA7C6-DECD-40dc-AAAC-73EA9940E0F9} - jirzi

Unicode queries not working

In my installation version 2214 can't find anything in cyrillics. In English all works fine. Previous version had everything OK. I guess is it a bug? Funny enough, on another machine works well... Strange... -- Anton

Indexer Alert Font too large

When indexing is complete, I get an alert - title = "Windows Desktop Search", text = "Indexing is complete. You are ready to start searching. Click here to search." But the font is too large for the width. (It's a large purple sans-serif font.) So the title puts "Windows Desktop" partially clipped off the top of the title area, and "Search dropping halfway into the text area.

The .OST file is inaccessible."

There's a known bugTROUOSTNotAvailable.htm in Outlook that can be triggered by Desktop Search if you have more than 1 GB of RAM and frequently use large OST files. A hotfix for Outlook solves this problem

Problem with shortcuts

I tried to create a shortcut with an advanced query in it. I entered:

@sc,kind:contact $w

when I enter "sc fred" the "sc" is treated as part of the search criteria and not the shortcut name. What are the limits on what can appear in a shortcut?

  • I don't have this problem. Worked perfectly for me. - Michael Griffiths

Indexer sometimes keeps handle on removable drive

I have a USB hard drive that is plugged into my laptop whenever it's on my desk; occasionally, but not always, when I try to "safely remove" it I get a message that the "device cannot be stopped." Checking the handles with the handle util from sysinternals, it turns out that the desktop search indexer has a handle on the drive. Fine -- this makes sense. So I try snoozing the indexer, and disconnecting a minute later ... but still can't, because the handle is still there. I could probably just yank the USB cord out, and nothing would be harmed, but that's so inelegant. Any way snoozing could be made to withdraw all handles on indexed drives, to prevent this?

Incorrect birthdays

Birthdays are indexed incorrectly - they are a day early. When I search my contacts by birthday (e.g. birthday:1980-01-01) all the results that show up matching the date 1980-01-01 would actually be people with a birthday on 1980-01-02 (shown correctly when you open up the contact). Could this be because of timezone issues? I'm in UTC+1000. Using Outlook 2003.

In certain scenarios Windows Desktop Search does not remember its last position (Maximized or Windowed mode)

Link clicked from MSN Search Deskbar (More...) opens up Windows Desktop Search in Windowed mode (Restore Down?) mode when it was last in Maximized mode.

  1. Search for anything using the MSN Search Deskbar (kind:folder)
  2. Click on "More..." to bring up Windows Desktop Search
  3. Windows Desktop Search opens up in Windowed mode
  4. Maximize Windows Desktop Search and then close it
  5. Do the same thing and again it opens up in Windowed Mode

Does not always happen but it happens enough to be annoying because I have to keep up maximizing the window. So it basically remembers it sometimes but randomly it'll just open up incorrectly.

Using version: 02.05.0000.1082

Answer: It's not exactly random. Windows Explorer sees each query as a different "path" - and it remembers its window size on a per-Path basis. So if you do the same query again, it should have the same window size as before. If you resize/maximize a blank query window, then close it - that size should be persisted when you open an empty search results window in the future. We are aware that this is not the desired behavior. -- BrandonPaddock

Internet Explorer hangs when attempting to shut down

I found after installing the new MSN desktop search games add-in, I started running into consistent hangs when shutting down explorer. I grabed the debug dump that was created when I ended task on it, put it through windbg, and here's what I found:

Things were working fine after the install of msn desktop search, but after I removed the computer from the domain and added it to a new one don't ask, when I loaded up a new-non-admin account, I got errors from MSN desktop search that indicated I needed registry permissions to run the application, upon which the application hung. After rebooting, I started experiencing this behavior. It was only after this change that I started seeing this behavior. Solution? Removing MSN Desktop search allows iExplorer to gracefully shut down once more. :^/

Answer: This would actually be an MSN Toolbar problem. Unfortunately, I'm not really an expert on that product. -- BrandonPaddock

Custom folders and e-mail locations in options crashes options window

Okay, this has happened to me on two of my computers in a row now (my desktop, and my laptop), and has never worked properly for me.

Here's what I do:

- Right-click the Desktop search tray icon, and go to "desktop search options".
- In the desktop search area, I select "custom folders and e-mail locations".
- Hit apply (or ok and redid the first two steps, or just go on to the next step, I've tried all three in different combinations)
- Click the "browse" button to select these custom locations that I want to have.

At this point, the computer thinks for a second, then just closes the entire options window. Desktop Search is still running fine in the traybar, and the event viewer shows NOTHING amiss.

What am I doing wrong?

Suggestion: I experienced a very similar problem. The diffence on mine is that when I hit OK to the options window, the options app would crash. I finally figured out a work-around. I snoozed the indexing for 1 hour and was able to successfully update what I wanted indexed. I resumed indexing and the number of files left to index started going up indicating it was indexing the new directory. -- Yargnits.

Outlook Plugin for Desktop Search Bogs Down Outlook 2003

I was having the problem that outlook would freeze for 3-5 seconds once or twice everytime I wrote an e-mail. Turning off name checking, spell checking and the like didn't change anything so I uninstalled all my Add-Ins. I was able to isolate the problem to the Outlook 2003 add-in. Search seems to work fine without the add-in installed and my problem went away in Outlook 2003.

Couple things to note that may contribute to the problem:

- My .pst file is large (>800 Megs)
- Other Plug-ins may have been causing cross-addin problems. I was using SpamBayes (spambayes.sourceforge.org) and Bells and Whistles (www.addressmanager.com) addins. Re-enabling them without the Outlook 2003 addin has fixed the problem.

Searching using parenthesis

My initial problem was that anytime I searched using parenthesis I would get no result ex. 12345678(1). I quickly figured out that quotes are needed for this search string. But when the results are shown for a file name it doesn't show the second parenthesis ex. result for a Word doc would be 12345678(3 testMe.doc and it should show 12345678(3) testMe.doc. It's just a little visual glitch that I thought I'd share.北京派克龙包装机械有限公司

13-4-2007. WDS won't search through the content of MDI or PDF files on FAT partition.
After installing WDS last week(newest version) on a Windows XP home edition(latest updates+fixes) with MSOffice 2007 Ultimate edition and indexing my c(NTFS) and D(FAT) partitions I ran into the problem that WDS didn't index the content of at least my pdf and mdi files on my D partition, although I had configured these file types in WDS as to index also the text content.
The strange part is that my Outlook pst file is also stored on my D partition and WDS did index also the content of all pdf files that are stored in my emails(in the pst file).
Also the standard 'companion search' of Windows XP does search through the content of my mdi files! So it looks like the IFilter of MDI is installed correctly on my system.
I still have to test if WDS will search through my pdf and mdi files if I store them on my C(NTFS) partition and let WDS re-index.
