IE7 Windows Update is application modal

When using Windows update on WinXp SP2 I found that the update dialog doesn't allow you to switch between page tabs and continue browsing

Wrong display of resize feature

If an image is greater than the area available for the browser the image is reduced to fit the available area and when the user hovers the mouse of the image appears a button to expand the image to its normal size.

This part works perfectly.

However when the user scrolls the image down the button to restore the image to its reduced size isn't cleared properly. As can be seen below:
http://www.geocities.com/mstrcontrol/IE7Bug01.jpg

-- MstrControl

Missing image control buttons

On IE6 when the user hovers the mouse over an image it appears a set of buttons that allows the user to execute some actions with the image, such as: save, print, email, etc.

IE7 isn't displaying these buttons.

IE7 doesn't show RSS properly

It appears to happen somewhat random so far, but IE7 should render an RSS feed with a more appealing visual instead of plain XML, as it's stated at IE7 Weblog (http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/archive/2005/08/02/446882.aspx).

At least today (2006.01.08), the RSS for "The Microsoft Internet Explorer Weblog" (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/Rss.aspx) is shown as plain XML, while the RSS for the "Internet Explorer Community Articles" (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/iemvp.xml) is shown as it should.

However, the Community Articles' RSS uses a stylesheet instruction while the Internet Explorer Weblog's RSS doesn't.

Anyway, as stated, the RSS should be rendered as a "Pretty RSS".

Error opening webmessenger.msn.com

Configuration Win XP Pro SP2 with latest fixes, IE7 beta from MSDN download.
Going to webmessenger.msn.com the page is not loading, but the following appears on screen:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
		   <system.web>
		       <customErrors mode="Off"/>
		   </system.web>

</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
		   <system.web>
		       <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
		   </system.web>

</configuration>

Logging on to the same URL on another PC with IE6 at the same time works fine, as it did on this computer before installing IE7.

I was not able to reproduce this problem as the page opened fine for me and I was able to log in. -- MstrControl

Can't Open Microsoft Partners Extranet Site

I am getting an HTTP 412 error when I try to access https://home.ep.microsoft.com/login.aspx. The page returned after opening the former URL is https://home.ep.microsoft.com/412.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/login.aspx.

IE 7 Beta 1 Javascript / Math Problem.

It seems Beta 1 is incorrectly computing a MD5 hash value. Details in my playground posting.
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=127383

Intuit Track_IT

Intuit Track-It! seems to have problems displaying URLs in the homepage after IE7 install. Some of the URLs have their text removed but the link is still there, some have text and link removed.

GuruNet

GuruNet (http://www.gurunet.com/) in IE7's Shortcut menu does not work, but Alt+Click does work

Unusual characters displaying

I have just installed Windows Vista and taken a look at Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1, and noticed that when IE loads up and navigates to msn.com (the default out-of-the box home page) in the time between where it displays the URL and the page title in the tab, it briefly displays some other characters. I have seen oriental(Chinese/Japanese/Korean) characters appear, on a couple of occasions I have also seen the Nazi Swastika appear. Think this needs to be looked into as I seem to recall MS recently receiving bad press and having to release a hotfix that removes the Swastika from a font.

It registers as version 4.0

when ever im on forums and peolpe have those pictures that say "you ip is x.x.x.x and." it says that its netscape version 4.0

- Probably due to the fact that it, like all versions of IE identify as Netcape 4 compatible Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0b; Windows NT 6.0)”. An issue with the detection program, not IE7. - Tezkah

Agreed. This is a problem with the way the site identifies the browser. And it should be moved to Invalid Bugs -- MstrControl

Process doesn't terminate properly

And hangs on to memory long after the browser window has closed. This seems to happen whenever you open a new browser window from an existing browser window. e.g. Go to google.com, right click on More link, and select "Open in new Window". Then close both browser windows. The iexplore.exe process is still running according to the Task Manager. This happens consistently with IE 7 Beta 1 on Windows XP, not so much on Windows Vista.

- Uninstall your Alexa first if installed
- I do not have Alexa installed.

I have a similar problem, and it's the worst kind of problem because it's somewhat random and I was not able to reproduce it at will. IE7b1 sometimes hangs and doesn't close. When I click on the close button it appears the "Close Now" dialog but IE7 doesn't close. And it gets worse because when this happens apparently it affects the entire system, because no window will close. The only way to restore the system is with a hard reset -- MstrControl

Me too - I can only kill the process using Sysinternals:Process Explorer. On a core duo machine the process left behind is consuming one full proc (which is clearly visible as one proc is fully utilized from the iexplore process, so it doesn't only not terminate - but a specific thread in the process uses upp all available cpu. -- jamo

Toolbar and Window size settings not saved in Limited User Account

I have noticed that cetain settings are not saved when IE7 is closed in limited user account. For example, I have switched standard buttons on in the toolbars menu, but when I close IE and re-open, the buttons always default to OFF. And the window size always goes back to a default too.

SBS 2003 Exchange Web access triggers an error

When I try to access the OWA of our SBS 2003 Premium (all fixes) I can log in, then it sez 'loading' (on german), then I get an error page "This page cannot be displayed..." (on german, I got no idea what the original english message might be).
Additionally on the server an error is logged in the server application event log:
		  The following fatal error occurred in the Remote Web Workplace application:
		  URL: https://192.168.1.2/Remote/client.aspx
		  Error Message: Die Eingabezeichenfolge hat das falsche Format.

Security issue between tabs?

When connecting to a mailbox via OWA (https://server/virtual directory) and then opening a new tab to connect to a different mailbox on the same server (https://server/exchange/) the same mailbox automatically opens without prompting. If I open the mailboxes in the reverse order, I do get prompted for the mailbox credentials on the second tab; although the fields are pre-populated, even though the remember password check box is blank.

IE 7 Crash

http://www.amake.us/software/ipodbackup/ this webpage crashes IE

_ Yep. It happens every time I try to access this site. I'm working to create a proper test case with the minimal markup to reproduce the error. -- MstrControl_

Transparents PNGs don't display correctly

As you can see on http://moins.de/2005/07/30/transparenz-mit-dem-ie-7-beta-1/ the internet explorer 7 beta 1 is producing wrong colors on transparent pngs. I could reproduce this on xp sp2.

With the same settings as stated I was not able to reproduce this behaviour as you can see below. -- MstrControl
http://www.geocities.com/mstrcontrol/ie7xff.jpg

Favorites messed up

I updated my IE 6 to IE7 Beta 1 and the scrolling of my bookmarkmenu isnt working anymore. Also the IE7 crashes when displaying to much favorites.

Note also: IE7 hangs when adding a new favorite with the same name as an existing favorite.

Feeds and Bookmarks Collide

If you browse to a site that has an RSS feed, say "Jim's Blog" and you use the Feeds button to add the feed to your favorites, it gets added as "Jim's Blog." But if you then bookmark the site with Ctrl-D, Internet Explorer offers to overwrite the feed bookmark with the page bookmark because they have the same title. Please append the string "_Feed" to default Feed bookmark names, to distinguish feeds from page bookmarks, and prevent this collision. For example, the site is bookmarked as "Jim's Blog" and its RSS feed is bookmarked as "Jim's Blog Feed".

Trillian Pro 3.1 Crashes

Trillian Pro 3.1 Crashes on start up. In other situations there are intermittent hangs with Trillian 3.1 installed even if IE7 is not running, only installed.
I cannot reproduce this bug with Trillian 3.1.0.121 and IE7b1 - TJc
Reopening because I am experiencing the hang issue which may be related to original bug. - TJc
I'm also having the same crash experiance. Shrage

The problem exists due to the MSN plugin. Cerulean has already released a updated plugin to fix the problem. Get it here - http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=74375

Update proxy details doesn't update existing open windows

If I change proxy, or update my pac file settings in Internet Options, new instances of IE use those settings. Existing instances use the previous settings. This used to work pre-IE7b1.

HTML Help doesn't work

When I try to view a chm help file that has been downloaded from the internet, the help browser loads about:blank rather than the help page. This happens when the chm file has what I think is called a persistent zone identifier associated with the file (on NTFS - when I double-click the file, I get a security warning before launching). If the file does not have the identifier (removed via Properties->Unblock) the help page is correctly displayed.

Excel/Word hyperlinks break

Since installing IE7 beta 1, it appears that hyperlink functionality in Excel 2003 has broken. Specifically, the URL associated with a hyperlink seems to have the first two characters cut off. So the URLs become something like "tp://somesite.com". This behavior is consistent.

I did a control experiment with a co-worker's machine. Using the same xls, the links in Excel work fine on his, while displaying the above behavior on mine. The only difference that I am aware of is that I am running the IE beta. (Also, the links work fine on Excel Mac.)

I have the same problem with Word hyperlinks. It affects most, but not all, hyperlinks. The problem affects both http: and mailto: URLs - they act as if they are tp: and ilto:. I can reproduce the problem on two machines, both running IE7 Beta 1, Office 2003 SP2. I cannot reproduce the problem on machines without IE7 Beta 1. Happy to provide sample Word documents, minidumps, etc. to anyone from Microsoft upon request - email davidj (at) edi.com.au.

Ryan Walters (ryanwalters.net) says: I'm also having trouble with Word hyperlinks after installing IE7 Beta 1. My hyperlinks appear fine in my Word documents on both of my machines, both of which have IE7 and Word 2003 SP2 installed. When I send the Word docs to other people who don't have IE7, however, the link URL is messed up. Sometimes people see just a comma for the link URL.

The links continued to display fine on my computers, however, even after being emailed to and back from a non-IE7 computer. So I uninstalled IE7 on one of my machines. Now the Word document displays the corrupted hyperlink. An easy workaround (instead of uninstalling IE7) is to save the documents in XML format.

I also experience the other issue where the first two letters of the link are missing, although I'm not sure of the steps to reproduce that issue.

Cannot access Remote Web Workplace

When I am using IE7 I cant access the Remote Web Workplace feature of Small Business Server 2003

Cannot Customize URL/Search Bar/Tabs Bar (Frequently Reported!)

Cannot move or remove URL Bar, Search Bar, or move Tabs Bar. Nor can URL Bar and Menu Bar be transposed to a more traditional order.
* It seems that the tabs and the mp3 address bar are joined together and not separate toolbars. I'd like to have control of where tabs are placed, be able to put links above the tabs and, actually, have the tabs positioned right above the windows. Couldn't seem to do this. Take a look at GreenBrowser for a few ideas.
* Just because Firefox has it, why copy it (the search bar)? How often do you need to search multiple search engines anyway. Googlebar, Yahoobar, MSN Bar - they're there for a reason!
* The main menu has been in the same position for 10 years. People know where it is, why change it?

No Tooltip on Tab headers.

Hovering over a tab that contains a large title will not bring up a tool tip to read the title.

"Show Go Button in Address bar" does nothing

The check box "Show Go Button in Address bar" in the advanced options does nothing.

Go/Stop/Reload Button Confusing

The "Go/Stop/Refresh" Button in IE 7.0 Beta 1 is awfully confusing. Having a button that can change from Stop to Reload while the user is in mid-click is going to be a real scream when trying to complete a transaction with a slow credit-card or shopping site. Please do not add any UI element that can be a combination of GO and STOP! Think of the disdain users have shown for "Start/Shut Down," this is the same principle. And I'm not sure I care if that's how "other browsers" do it. There needs to be a button that always means Stop. The only logically permissable combination button is Go/Reload.

Tab Font is Arial, Not System Font

The font used for the tabs is Arial. It should be the same as the menu bar font (typically Tahoma, on XP SP2).

Yahoo Companion (Toolbar) does not work

The Yahoo Companion (Yahoo Toolbar) does not retrieve the buttons from Yahoo!

Open in New Tab

No "Open in new tab" in favourites. This should also be in the right click menu for any links you click on.

Outlook Print Preview Error

Since installing IE7 I now get an "object required" javascript error at line 1626 of res://ieframe.dll/preview.dlg when trying to print an HTML formatted Outlook email.

SAP Enterprise Portal 5.0 doesn't display

My employer uses SAP and I access it through their web front end - portal 5.0. IE 7 beta 1 fails to render the portal home page while IE 6 works fine.

"Phishing" is Jargon

"Phishing" is jargon. Please call this feature something else, consider: Fraud-Prevention, Anti-Deception, Anti-Scam, Genuine-Site, Reality-Check, Hazard-Check, Safety-Net. Use anything else that suggests trust, central blacklist, or vigilence, but please don't put "phishing" in the application, because it's ugly and passe.

PNG Background Image doesn't display if Opacity filter is used

<div style="width:100px;height:100px;filter: alpha(opacity=80); background-image: url('Background.png');"></div>

However this works correctly in IE6 or if you change the image to a GIF.

XMLHttpRequest does not work offline

If you have a HTML page and a XML file saved on your disk and try to load the XML file via XMLHttpRequest it doesn't work (JavaScript is activated). However, the same documents work if you upload them to a webserver.

Automatic redirect from test.html?query=test to test.html (offline mode)

If you create a simple HTML file (e.g. on your C drive) and call it in the browser using the address "C:\test.html?query=test" you automatically get redirected to "C:\test.html".
That is not good - a JavaScript of mine uses the parameter "query" for an offline search. IE 6 does it correctly.

Leftover Bugs From IE6

"Cannot find server" refreshed doesn't update page title

If I get a "Cannot find server" error while loading a page, and hit refresh, and the page loads, the title (on the tab and in the window title bar) is not updated and still says "Cannot find server".

Cannot Disable Marquee

For Section 508 compatibility, and everyone's sanity, IE7 needs an option to disable scrolling marquees.

Maximized State of Windows Not Persistent

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 does not remember that I keep my IE window maximized, and every time I launch it, it opens restored. The same holds for any link I open in a new window. If I close a maximized IE7 window, the next time I launch IE7 it should be maximized.

Font Size Scaling Issues

* The range of font sizes is too narrow, having only five levels of zoom.
* Zooming does not have any effect on fonts specified in points, pixels, etc. An example of a site that demonstrates the problem is ThinkGeek.com .

CSS bug: Form Controls Disregard or Completely Incorrectly render CSS

Form Controls Testcase - Checkboxes draw borders and backgrounds not in the control itself, but as if there was a DIV container and the plain white checkbox was inside. Text fields just disregard styles in some cases. This page offers some great examples of IE7 incorrectly rendering the CSS.

No Security Zone for "My Computer"

Since IE6 SP2, an Information Bar pops up and IE refuses to run JavaScript on pages located on My Computer. I found the setting for this buried in properties, which is not intuitive.

Freeze

IE Freezing . it's not my url, i have a stripped down version but can't find a place to upload, paste here:

		 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
		         "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
		 <html>
		 <head>
		 <style type="text/css">
		 body{font-family: fixedsys}
		 .skipper {display: none !important;}
		 #main {margin: 0 15em 0 0; padding: 3em 4em 3em 4em; }  /* [FREEZER] padding: 3em 4em 3em 4em */
		 .prev-next { float: left;}  /* [FREEZER] float: left */
		 .prev-next li { float: left; width: 40%;}
		 </style>
		 </head>
		 <body>
		 <div id="main">
		 <div class="skipper"><a href="#navhead">site navigation/presenta</a></div>
		 <ul class="prev-next" id="pn-top">
		 <li class="prev">&amp;larr; <a href=""></a></li>
		 <li class="main"><a href="">Main</a></li>
		 <li class="next"><a href="">Scenes From An iChat</a> &rarr;</li>
		 </ul>
		 </body>
		 </html>

innerHTML property for select tag fails

When you try to set the innerHTML property of a select it strips off the opening <option> tag so
the list won't render.

Progress bar still appears after page is load.

Some times the progress bar (on the status bar) is still shown even after the page is load. A test case could be my own site (http://pjondevelopment.50webs.com) that on the onLoad event of the body starts a script that downloads some XML from the site in order to update the page contents.

Even after al the contents are displayed the progress bar still remains there.

-- MstrControl

JavaScript: 1, 2, 3, .length is 4 in all checked versions (IE 6, 7, 8)

In every browser except for IE the length of the array 1, 2, 3, is 3.
Internet Explorer creates an array of 4 (!) elements where the last element is "undefined". IMHO this is a failure which can be fixed quite fast.

Minor Bugs

No feedback on back/forward button press. There's disabled, active and highlight, but the button image doesn't change when you press it.

Scrollbar Colors Not Applied to SELECT Scrollbars

Testcase - shows that scrollbar colors do not work on SELECT scrollbars.

Intermittent Resize Widget

The resize widget for resized image files is too difficult to produce, and takes several seconds to appear. It should appear at all times while the image is being hovered over. There should also be a method for keyboard-navigating users.

IE title bar icon is non-existant on startup

When I load up a new IE7 window, for a brief second the window's titlebar icon is that tacky generic icon that .exes have.

Blank Tab Not Intuitive/Visually Appealing

* There should be an icon that better represents the purpose of opening a new tab.
* Understand why it is there, but it looks ugly.

Invalid Bugs

These are poorly described, have no testcase, or otherwise can't be reproduced:

Windows Media Player affected?

Since installing IE7 if I run media player (without playing anything) wmplayer.exe's CPU usage goes up to 99% and stays there. When I uninstalled IE7, Media Player worked fine again.
I cannot reproduce this bug with WMP10 and IE7b1 - TJc

Crashes after first install on XP SP2

Error report: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.5112.0 ModName: ieframe.dll ModVer: 7.0.5112.0 Offset: 00008de5. Unable to restore previous restore point, so cannot revert to IE6. HELP! fad1956 at yahoo.com
I cannot reproduce this bug with XP SP2 and IE7b1, check background tasks and drivers to isolate cause? - TJc
I had the problem. When typing in the search box IE will cause an error in 'ieframe.dll'. After a few hours I isolated the problem to the Auto Complete feature. Specifically, the 'Forms' item. To resolve goto Tools > Internet Options > Content Tab > Auto Complete. Uncheck Forms and restart IE. No more crashes. To verify this bug perform the mentioned steps in reverse. Restart IE and type into the Search box - MarcFou

IE7 sometimes does not show PNG image.

Sometime I can see the picture and sometime the PNG image does not display. Testcase
Works for me every time, can you find out how to reproduce this? - TJc

IE does not recognise the application/atom+xml type in <link> tags

(Testcase wanted!)

IE7 does not display Microsoft Update correctly

It gets all confused and puts things in the wrong frames. This renders the Microsoft Update site unusable
Works for me. - TJc

Installer fails with "the data area passed to a system call is too small"

Install fails with the above error message during the "Backing up the Registry" phase.
Worked for me, and most of us, presumably. Can you track down more information, maybe narrow down to what background tasks/drivers that cause the issue? - TJc
I have this same problem, Seems to be associated with a large registry with lots of installed keys in HKLU/Software (15K+ entries). Running VS2003/VS2005 Beta, Full MS-office. I disabled all the plugins problem continued. I tried on serveral machines, 6 out of 8 installs worked. Size of Local User Registry seems to be at issue.
I installed under the Administration Account, installation succeeded but when I logged back into my account the following errors were present:
* No Favorites just a been when clicked
* Would not go to Windows Update.
Uninstall successful. Does not seem to be minor. utech626

Transparent PNG support is incorrect

Please see http://www.panic.com and drag the magnet/lorry over the icons below them. Is the beta meant to implement transparent PNGS? As it displays the same way as IE6 does.
The magnet/lorry images are GIFs... - TJc

Problem with padding tag

After set style on the image -> style="border: 1px solid #008000; padding: 10px"
IE doesn't show padding even it have value at 50px.

<iframe> border width bugs seem to remain

For IE6+, <iframe border="0" frameborder="0" ...> border width attributes fail to set a borderless embedded frame.
There is no such attribute except in your imagination. Consult your W3 standards and use style="border:0;". - TJc
Hi, TJc. Are you sure? ("FRAMEBORDER = sBorder...This property is defined in HTML 4.0 and is defined in W3C DOM Level 1... Applies To: FRAME, FRAMESET, IFRAME"). My trouble is actually with the scripting: <iframe ID="MyIF" src=...> <script>var m = document.getElementById('MyIF'); m.setAttribute('frameborder','0'); /* or even m.setAttribute('style','"frameborder:no"'); */ Please have a test and try to help. Thx. -Bing, Beijing.
