Improving User interface

(Peter Glaskowsky) There's a lot to be learned from the successful aspects of earlier pen-based computing devices. For example, a comparison of Tablet PC with the Newton teaches us that handwritten ink is not as useful as recognized text. The Newton's standard method was to recognize pen input shortly after it was entered, converting ink to text whenever a predefined confidence level was achieved by the recognizer. By showing the text to the user relatively promptly, the user can correct errors without interfering with the flow of thought, and the result is near-perfect text at nearly the same rate of input as ink alone.

I'm sure someone made a conscious decision to do things differently on Tablet PC, but that decision was a mistake, and it's long overdue to be corrected.

Also, it's critical that you stop memorializing line breaks in the user's text input. Users move to the next line because there's no room to keep writing, not because they want the recognized text to contain a hard carriage return at that position! Insert hard returns only when the user skips a line.

You should create a new font that is more similar to handwriting. The Newton's standard font was designed for high legibility in spite of occasional recognition errors-- letter shapes that are similar enough to be confused by the recognizer also have subtly similar symbol shapes.

Tablet Input Panel

(Josh Einstein) A public API for accessing the correction interface. The auto recognition and correction on the handwriting input area of the TPC input panel would be great to drop onto a form.
