Our Xbox One app has launched!

Description

Hey folks, watching videos is hard work... so hard that sometimes it is better if you can do it from your couch... so last year we launched an Channel 9 app on the Xbox 360. Of course, technology keeps marching on; the Xbox One is the new hotness, so we had to keep up. I know this was probably a big worry for you, but worry no more, the Xbox One version of Channel 9 is available now for your video watching needs.

I think Michael Butler expressed our feelings quite clearly in this tweet:

Want to experience this same level of developer bliss? Go now to your Xbox One, go to the Apps section of the store and it should be right there in the 'New Releases'.

Enjoy!

It would be great IF I could access my queue. Am I just missing where that is? (It really is great besides that!)

I'll have to go check it out RIGHT NOW... :D

@BraveStarr: You're right, we totally agree that it would be great and super useful to have your queue there. Being our first attempt at developing an Xbox One app, we kept it simple for this launch but we would love to add the queue feature to the app. Thanks for checking it out, hope you enjoy!

@Cara9: Using it right now with my queue up on my phone ;) Great work!

Xbox One app downloaded, but after starting the application, the app gives an error and then exit. (try again later...)

Desperately want one on my iPad! One I can download videos to and can view offline. That's in front of me all the time, even when travelling, the Xbox isn't. Better still, create an open api so we can do it ourselves.

Also receiving an error at app startup. It says there's a problem connecting to Channel 9. Try again in a few minutes.

@Martin Zonderland: @LeonMeijer: Sorry you're having trouble with it! I'm not seeing this error myself - do you have a good internet connection? I would try searching with Bing or checking your internet connection: Settings > Network. Let us know if the problem persists.

Hello, I am having the same app startup issue saying the same "try again in a few minutes" just after the main screen shows up. And the app closes, then when you launch the app again it stops... I guess somethign went wrong on non english countries?

@CodeRangerDan: Hey Dan, the API is there (http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Feedback/Is-there-some-kind-of-API-that-can-be-used-to-access-the-data-on-Channel-9 ), the same one we use in our apps... let us know if you have questions.

@Adriano: I don't think it is that simple, as we've had many tweets and comments from people in non-English countries who seem to be using the app without issue. We'll keep trying to track down the issue though!

Same error, regio Netherlands, uninstalled and installed again, still same problem. Application start, see one spash of the application and then exit.

Same error (region Netherlands). The App starts and then gives a 'Cannot connect to Channel 9. There's a problem connecting to Channel 9' error...and the only button I can click is the 'Exit' button

Meanwhile, the Windows 8.1 app doesn't work. The live tile hasn't updated for 10 months, Azure Friday doesn't return any results. It's very disappointing.

Update : When changing the Language and Regio from Netherlands to English United Stated, regio United States, the app works perfect...

So it's something with language and regio settings.

Awesome!  Now the XBOX One app just needs access to the queue.

It would be excellent to have the app sync across all 3 screens (i.e. Win Phone, Windows/Surface, Xbox apps) and the web all using the one Microsoft Passport login to sync the profile.

Works in principle with XBOX with German language settings. Only problem here is that you more or less only see German content. On the Home tap there is some English content. If you try to search for something again only German results show up. Only way I found around it is to set the language to English and therefore also the location to US. Please change it to also show English content when the XBOX is set to a non English language too.

Sorry for all of the trouble, it does seem to be an issue where the language is set to something that we don't have a lot of Channel 9 content, the app is crashing. We will fix asap!

@ZippyV: Kind of a tangent but that's strange about the Windows Store app not working for you.

If I remember correctly, live tiles do stop updating after non-use of a few days (I can't remember the exact number). If you open up the app, it should update the live tile for another few days after you stop using it again.

I just opened it and checked Azure Friday and I do see content as recent as 4 days ago. Maybe I can help solve that issue with some more information. Do you have another language selected on your PC besides English? Are you logged into the app under your Channel 9 account or are you signed out? Have you updated the app recently? We pushed out an update about a month ago.

As a side note to the Windows 8.1 app. I have some problems too. App opens and shows video links but when you click on a link the video does not open. There is a blank page with the "loading ring".

Locale is set to German. It makes no difference if I am logged in with my Ch9 account or not.

Update on my Win 8 app problem. For me it was a solution to uninstall and install the app again. Might be that I first installed the app when the machine was on US locale. I later switched to German locale and after the last App update it stopped working. Whatever configuration the uninstall deletes it was sufficient to get it running again.

Okay all, we have updated our odata api which should fix this issue. For users using other languages on their Xbox One besides English, we are now including English content along with content matching your selected language. Please let us know what your experience is like now, if this fixed it for you or not. Thanks for your patience and feedback!

Works for me now. Thanks for the fast reaction and fix,

@Cara9: Nope, still no go with Azure Friday.

However, I did notice something. The app is full screen, when I drag it to the left of my screen so it resizes to a small vertical band the videos do show up. I can resize the window by dragging the resizebar to full screen and keep seeing the videos. But when I click the back arrow (back to shows) then click Azure Friday again I'm still back to a white screen.

This only seems to happen with Azure Friday. Ping, Level Up, TWC9, the 'Home' screen, no problem.

The live tile seems to be gone too?

Will you be able to watch live events on the Xbox One app?

    Like;) ... the Build Keynote?

  • User profile image
    Tagaron

While I hope that the app can do this especially for the BUILD I have a better plan. I will be in Moscone center.:D

For me the answer is of interest for Ignite one week later.

@Dirtbagg: @Tagaron: Being our first try at an Xbox One app, we kept this initial release simple which means you won't be able to watch the events live but once the videos are up for on demand viewing (*usually* 24-48 hours after), you will be able to watch them via the app. We would love to add this capability in the future though!

    Great app!

But please improve the list of search results: the title shown is too short to understand the content, especially if it is a series and the sequence number is not shown (example: What's new with Asp.net 5)

It would also be great to be able to have a "watch later" queue, and even better the possibility to select videos (playlists) from this website and through my account be able to see them on xbox One!

The link to the channel9 app from the xbox.com site sends you to the wrong place (CBC app).

    http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/entertainment/xbox-one/live-apps/home

Might want to have someone look into that.
