  • Hi, Good intro.

Is there a visual layout tool within VS within the Cordova plugin for doing the html and putting the controls on the page?

Does blend do that for javascript in a similar way to what it does for XAML and ASP.net?

    Regards,

    Grant Rostig

  • @GrantRostig: Currently Blend's HTML and CSS authoring capabilities are limited to Windows JavaScript/HTML apps. You can see a tour here: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2013/2-311

However, bringing some of these same capabilities to Cordova based applications is something we have been thinking about. Are there particular capabilities you would find most useful or frameworks you would want to see well represented?

Good point with a visual layout tool. Intel has that functionality/feature in their Intel XDK software but their tool is still too unstable to work with. It's slow and crashes way too often.
Anyway, the visual layout tool is very usefuly for quickly adding basic controls like sliding menus, grids, lists, buttons, navigation bars, padding/margins/alignments, pages and subpages etc.
They also have a very intuitive way of running the Apps on your phone using their "App Preview" app that connects to your local dev host or the Intel online services. That way you can easily deploy apps for multiple users to review the apps before publishing in production.

  • @ChuckLantz: If Microsoft makes Blend a tool to compose and edit general HTML5 and CSS3 animations, it will be so awesome.

One time I used Blend to make a CSS animation in a Windows HTML app, but I had to grab the code and put it in my pure HTML5 web page. It's so cool that Blend has this WYSIWYG editor for HTML, but on the other hand, it is a pity that it doesn't support pure HTML.

I think it's the time for Microsoft to support pure HTML+CSS+JS projects in development tools.

    Thanks! :)

  • Cool intro! thanks! [H]

Having a visual designer could be something cool but i think that a fully integration with javascript frameworks like backbone will be nice and, in my experience, app-framework is the best framework to develop cordova based apps, so, why not bring it onboard? It's small and fast, plugin based and made from scratch for mobile apps.

Does it works with express editions?

Could someone elaborate on the need for a remote mac to build for IOS?
Does this mean that the developer needs to have an available mac or Microsoft supplies a remote device.

    Thanks

Hi, Is there a good tutorial to set up ionic and angular with it? Preferably video!!

  • Tony MoffattTony Moffatt

@Jon Lacey, use PhoneGap Build and TestFlight to deploy to a Mac!!

Hi, I was interested once in HTML5 development but I couldn't find any info about scheduling tasks f.e. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh202942%28v=vs.105%29.aspx
    Is it possible?

I'm thinking f.e. of checking web server and notifing user when something new occurs by some notification or live tile. Is it possible with HTML on WP or Android?

    Thank You in advance ;)

  • sgrebnovsgrebnov

Marcin, you can try push notifications

Would love to see a demo on how you can use VS to develop cross platform apps with integration with Rhomobile instead of Cordiva via the VS plugin!

Hello all, I am fairly new to Visual Studio and web development, what would be the recommended technologies to learn before diving into this Cordova development? I suppose HTML, CSS and Javascript, but what specifically about them (i.e. libraries?) should I learn before trying to do this development? Thanks!!

  • @Jon Lacey For the Visual Studio supported method, yes, you need a Mac somewhere in your environment.  However, that Mac could be cloud hosted using something like MacInCloud if your environment allows this kind of use.

  •  @Makki Currently the CTP requires Visual Studio Pro. Express support is something we are keeping in mind as we move out of CTP.

  • @Tony Moffatt: There is actually an AngluarJS sample app.  You can find it here: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/AngularJS-TODO-Sample-for-b651512a/

  • @Scott Kessler:I would recommend looking into client-side JavaScript frameworks like AngluarJS, Ember, or WinJS. The wonderful thing about this style of development is you have choices, but that can be overwhelming. As a result, there are some samples and templates in the Visual Studio gallery.   We plan to add more as time goes on. http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/site/search?f%5B0%5D.Type=Topic&f%5B0%5D.Value=Multi-Device%20Hybrid%20Apps&f%5B0%5D.Text=Multi-Device%20Hybrid%20Apps
