In templates all your specialization is happening at design time, in generics it happens at runtime. That's just one of the differences between the two. Hear Scott Currie, program manager on the Visual C++ team, discuss the differences.

      Generics can be stored in Your User's Terminal Set or Box, allowing more powerful Executions, via a Smarter Terminal Unit. Templates can be treated similarly, but, in this context, are Application Specific! However, in an Application Suite, all may be shared!
