Microsoft became the first company to publicly announce a data center designed out of shipping containers. The announcement was made by Mike Manos, who leads the Microsoft Global Foundations Data Center team, at Data Center World. To key the notes from Manos' speech, the Data Center Links blog has the details. The Microsoft Chicago facility was the first to be built out of these containers. Each container houses 1000-2000 systems each. The facility is scalable yielding anywhere from 150,000 to 440,000 servers.  (via Steve Clayton)
