On September 9th, the NFL experimented with Silverlight technology by broadcasting the Vikings/Saints game live via NBC’s Football Extra. The online telecast featured extra camera angles, in addition to Silverlight's smooth streaming, HD quality video technology. Silverlight, which turns your computer screen into a TV/DVR combo with player controls like pause and rewind, has gained in popularity for displaying live video broadcasts on the web and has been used in the past for sporting events, most notably, the Olympics.
The Silverlight streaming won’t be available for all NFL games, though, only NBC’s Sunday-night game, going forward. And it won’t be available at all during playoffs. But it definitely shows what the technology is capable of, and football fans away from their TVs are likely grateful for the effort.
