Volcanic Ash Hits Bing Maps

Microsoft’s Johannes Kebeck, a member of the Bing Maps team, is stuck in Stockholm thanks to the Icelandic volcano eruption which has grounded thousands of flights across Europe. But instead of just napping at the airport, he put his free time to good use by creating a new application of the volcano and the ash it spewed into the air. First, Kebeck found some imagery of the ash via NASA’s MODIS Rapid Response System. Then he created a Bing Maps Silverlight app on Windows Azure which shows these NASA images overlaid on the Bing Maps interface.

The new map app is available here. It’s pretty impressive – and not just the ash, but the app itself!
