SIP is an international standard that describes how to set up, control, and terminate multimedia communication sessions and, SDP is a way to describe media initialization that creates RTP-based media streams. Skype for Business uses SIP as the underlying communications protocol for everything going on between clients and servers, so knowing how the SIP protocol works is crucial to fully understanding how it all works under the covers.
