Do you always have to answer questions such as: ‘What ERP column does this dimension attribute come from?’ ‘Were there any changes in the calculations compared to last month?’ Most data-warehousing professionals are familiar with the concept of data lineage. Data warehouses are very often accountable for tracking whatever alterations upstream data is subjected to, once it crosses over into the data warehouse environment. SQL Server Metadata Toolkit, a free community tool, can track these alterations within an ETL and cube-environment by scanning SQL Server metadata and presenting a series of data output-input dependencies as a graph of nodes and links.
