Hardware development leveraging n-core technology and 64Bit computing turned around the capabilities of industry standard servers radically over the last six years. This session gives an on overview on how these changes enabled the Windows and SQL Server platform to run largest SAP implementations on industry standard hardware. Based on real customer scenarios, we show how existing SAP customers implemented SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 database compression and the impact it made on their storage costs. High-Availability configurations of SAP customers with SQL Server 2008 (R2) are shown and discussed for pros and cons. Principle considerations for successful deployments of SAP on SQL Server are listed and impact of new technologies like SSD or Virtualization discussed.
