  • Do we need to uninstall Express before installing Community?

  • @gt65345: Community is basically Professional version with a different licensing according to the download page.

    Thank you a lot!

Do you plan to provide link for offline installation (ISO image or something like that) please?

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@Petr: You can get both the web installer and ISO here, http://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs#d-community

    This is awesome.

    Impressive guys, thank you

  • Can we install VS 2013 Update 4 directly? I haven't installed Update 1, 2 or 3 in my VS 2013.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@habula:Yes. The VS Updates are cumulative, so you can jump from RTM right to Update 4 if need be...

  • JayJay

Sorry I am a newbie and wanted to know the what is not in community edition which is available in Professional version?

  • Hello, what is the difference between Visual Studio Ultimate Edition Update 4 and Visual Studio Community Edition 2013?, can I have both installed?, thanks in advance for your answer.
  • NuriNuri

Did Visual Studio Professional subscribers (like me) just get shafted?

  • @Nuri:According to this post ,yes, as Pro subscribers via Azure / Visual Studio Online, [we] pretty much have just been shafted.  It would be good to get an official statement on this.

  •  @kjobara You do not need to uninstall Express before using Community.

  • @Jinal Have you signed in to Community? That should update the license and fix that. If you need to sign out after that you can. The license should be good for one year before you need to sign in again.

  • @John Yes.

  • @Jay Community and Pro share most of the same feature set, only a few things like the Office Tools are included in Pro that aren't in Community. There are use limitations on Community though, some of which are described here: http://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-community-vs

  • @JorgeMontano Community is not on this comparison chart but Pro and Ultimate are. As I mentioned to Jay there are also usage restrictions on Community you can find summarized in the Q&A here.

Regarding having both Community and Ultimate installed not really. If you have a higher level edition already installed Community cannot be installed. If you install Community first, then decider to install Ultimate it is an in place installation, not isolated. As such you'll be running Ultimate. If you installed a higher level edition as a trial and it expires, you can uninstall it and Community will remain.

We did look at making Community an isolated installation similar to Express. The experience we wanted to provide with Community was to provide all of the same functionality as Professional. While we see the value of an isolated installation, bringing together all of the functionality of Professional back onto an Express base represented a significant engineering challenge which introduced risking a degraded experience. In particular we were worried that pursuing that path we would unintentionally break something in use by extensions. By building it off of the existing Professional base we significantly reduced the risk of that. Yes that means it isn't isolated from other VS installations within the same version, but that is the same experience Pro and higher SKUs have today. As such we felt that was an acceptable trade off. If you have an existing installation of Pro or higher and need to validate an extension or anything else in Community we have made it available as an Azure VM so you can quickly try that out without having to change your primary development machine.

  • That composition notebook decal is catchy.

  • JosephatJosephat

I have installed commununity but on the help>Registerproduct tab it says my licence will expire in 30days does that mean its a trial version and not free

  • JosephatJosephat

    @robotdad i installed community 2013 yesterday,today it says:
Licence: 30day trial(for evaluation purposes only)
This licence will expire in 29days

  • ranuxranux

Is there an offline installer (.iso) file to download?

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@ranux: Yes. http://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/ scroll down to "Community 2013 with Update 4" click on it to expand and then click on DVD5 ISO image

  • Fantastic news! Well done Microsoft.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@Josephat: Just sign in with a Windows Account (or click on "Check for an updated license" and sign in) and you should be good to go.

    Awesome news. THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!!

  • dasiekdasiek

This one from Q&A is confusing for me:
    "
Q: Who can use Visual Studio Community?
A: Here’s how individual developers can use Visual Studio Community:
•Any individual developer can use Visual Studio Community to create their own free or paid apps.

Here’s how Visual Studio Community can be used in organizations:
•An unlimited number of users within an organization can use Visual Studio Community for the following scenarios: in a classroom learning environment, for academic research, or for contributing to open source projects.
•For all other usage scenarios: In non-enterprise organizations, up to 5 users can use Visual Studio Community. In enterprise organizations (meaning those with >250 PCs or > $1MM in annual revenue), no use is permitted beyond the open source, academic research, and classroom learning environment scenarios described above.
    "

For me it looks like my (small) organization can use VS for building paid apps. But what I found out: We can't create paid apps for client who is enterprise.

  • I can't belive, this is great.

  • aakil786aakil786

so it is free for people that work for free, what is the point of that?

  • PetePete

@RobotDad - I had a copy of 2013 ultimate installed and after much difficulty removing everything via registry and other tools, I finally got 2013 community to install. When I started it, it thinks a license has expired. So I signed in and it downloaded a new license, but says it's going to expire in 90 days? Any ideas?

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@Pete: In 90 days you'll need to renew the license, it will be free and you'll just need to sign in to get it. This works the same way as in the existing Express editions or if you install VS 2013 Pro/Premium/Ultimate without a Product Key.

  • Ahmad Syafriza NasutionAhmad Syafriza Nasution

Is there download link for Visual Studio Comunnnity Edition 2013 without Udate 4? *sorry for bad english

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

    @Ahmad Syafriza Nasution: No.

  • @Pete it just means you'll need to sign in to refresh that license within 90 days.

  • @dasiek this is a case where the EULA is clearer than the Q&A. There isn't a restriction on who you can sell software to that is made with Community. If you are contracting for an enterprise you might not be able to use it, you should review the terms in the EULA if you have any question on that.

I think think the link to the iso is labeled wrong. It says it is dvd5 image but you get a 6.8 gig iso file so that really a dvd9 image. Do you plan to release dvd5 iso images so we could install from two standard dvd's?

Is there any difference beetween Visual Studio 2013 Community and Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate ?
Visual Studio 2013 Community included "All great features", Are these features contained in Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate ?

    Thank you !

  • I love you Microsoft! Thank you!!!!!

  • Very good introduction video. I'm impressed and generally nothing about microsoft impresses me, given I worked there when they still had 'workaholic wednesdays'. :)

P.S. I like the intellisense feature, but for ME, a virgo and an extremely fast and accurate typist, I have a little foible... I seldom pay attention to what's happening on the screen. That is to say usually I'm not staring at the screen as I type but 'inside my head' so that I just type it all, if you grok me. I think that's because I worked in publishing for a couple decades and was an early adopter of GML then SGML. At the same time I was a C then C++ developer. My fingers take instructions directly from my brain and translate it onto the screen via the keyboard. I've tried using voice software but it actually slows me down. Sorry I'm talking about ME, not about your lovely video, but that's the way of someone heading towards 70 with 54 years in an industry. (I should write a book, oh wait! I AM writing a book). :)

  • Klaus JakobsenKlaus Jakobsen

Great video. Now if only a full installer was available and not some poor webinstaller which only works while the program is new...

  • sunnysunny

hi i am new to these things so i want to ask can we use community for desktop apps like other versions of vs 10,12,13...and will it expire after some time....

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@sunny: Yes. Remember, Visual Studio 2013 Community is essentially Visual Studio 2013 Professional, with a different license/EULA. So if you can do it in Profession you can do it in Community.

You will have to renew your license every 90 days, but doing that is free.

  • sunnysunny

    thanks..going to install it now...and u r doing a gud job..keep up..

  • @gduncan411: Thanks for the link ,it works fine..(a)

  • Bravo, Microsoft.  You've done a very good thing and we appreciate it.

  • YKdevMSYKdevMS

Hi. Great news. Many thanks to Microsoft.
My fresh installation says the licence has expired, whether I'm signed in or not. Please help.

  • Hi

I'd like to thank Microsoft for this brave decision.

I think you have finally realized that the rate of adoption of Microsoft technologies is very likely going to be greatly amplified by moving .NET to open source and making a fairly comprehensive tool such as the excellent Visual Studio Pro available to individuals and small businesses.

Learning and adopting new technologies can be time consuming and very expensive for small businesses such as mine and this sort of things make a huge difference. We feel that Microsoft Azure services offer great value and productivity gains and are now finally accessible to all of us. Never mind spending a bit more on them and even committing to them for any new project now that the tools are there for free.

Well done Microsoft you have just taken on board another business for its entire lifetime.

    Regards

  • Today I performed password reset. I recently noticed that my VS Community works fine and no longer requests the licence !!

  • ALCoderALCoder

Does VS Community edition have (code lens) code information indicators? It doesn't show up in mine.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@ALCoder: No. Feature wise, VS 2013 Community is generally equivalent to VS 2013 Professional (aka "Pro"). CodeLens is only available in Ultimate.

To compare the editions, check out http://www.visualstudio.com/products/compare-visual-studio-products-vs

    Thank you.

    Hi guys,
i have installed vs 2013 update4 community edition,
it does not provide any project option for android or windows phone app development as well as it is 30 days trail but it is said that it is free.

    Please guide me
    thanks.

  • MashMash

Hi Guys! .I iam trying to register visual studio community 2013 under Help>RegisterPrduct>Check for an updated Licence.
But am getting this error message...Sorry we ran into a problem SP324095 Our service was unable to complete the request.what could be the problem please help

  • @Jon: No, we don't have any plans to release DVD5 iso images.

  • @H Bardavid: Sure, check this post on how to get the Office Developer Tools. Unlike Pro those aren't in the box with Community.

  • @tushar: You have to sign in at least once to extend the installed license beyond 30 days, there isn't a charge for that. Where are you looking for the projects?

  • @melkor54248: I can't explain the missing files on creating those project types. Those are placeholders to enable going and getting the Xamarin extension for building Android and iOS apps so that is expected. I don't know what the errors in those projects would be, you'll be better off reporting that to Xamarin. If the error is caused by something on our side it will get routed back to us.

  • @Mash: The best way to get to the bottom of that will be to file bug using Connect or send a frown with contact info.

  • @Hai Tran: Community is comparable to Pro, not Ultimate. This product comparison page doesn't have Community on it yet, but you can see the differences between Pro and Ultimate there.

  • tushartushar

    @robotDad, Thanks for your reply.
When I go to file->New project option there is no project option available for windows phone, android or ios app
I want to know, how can I use vs2013 community editionfor developing mobile applications?

  • @tushar: Windows Phone or Universal apps should be available under the selection for Store Apps for C++, C# or VB. The Cordova multi-device hybrid apps are under JavaScript and TypeScript.

I've just account Visual Studio Online and license for Visual Studio 2013 Professional paying monthly. Can I migrate to Community Edition for free?

How assign license to Community Edition in Visual Studio Online?

  • DhendersonDhenderson

I've had pro trial installed before, under an account to which I have lost the password, and can't reset or access.
On uninstalling this and installing community, I'm told that I can't sign in with my new account as visual studio is still registered to my old account, and I should perform a 'switch user operation'. Presumably I can't do this without access to the old account, so I'm a bit stuck...

  • I do not want to be ungrateful, but why the Community version is named 2013 instead of 2014? Do this means that the community version will be one release behind from the last one? Thanks Microsoft for this gift to the community.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@lorenzosjb: The current/latest versions of Visual Studio are "2013" so this version of Visual Studio Community 2013 is inline with them. It's feature equivalent to Visual Studio Professional 2013, so the "2013" fits just right...

When Visual Studio 2015 comes out, there will be a Visual Studio Community 2015 released at that time too.

In short, no, Community will be in line with the other editions in the future, like it is now.

Thank you for providing Visual Studio Communty 2013.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

What a visionary decision ! Thanks Microsoft - at last, one for the little guy and the next generation.

  • AlanAlan

Ok. This is past the point of annoyance:

The VS Community 2013 ISO installer fails for me when attempting to acquire "VsGraphics Helper Dependencies." The visual output is an "error X" icon with "Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 VsGraphics Helper Dependencies Incorrect function."

    Installation Options selected:
[x] Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools
    [x] Microsoft Web Developer Tools

The first reference to "Error" in the log file is
"Error 0x80070001: Failed attempt to copy payload from: 'E:\packages\VS_Clean\VS_PreClean_vs.exe' to: C:\Users\me\AppData\Local\Temp\{96a8b90c-0a91-4e76-ab34-730c23923d11}\vs_preclean_vs."

Farther down the log after failed retries, I see
    "[A4F4:1B8C][2014-12-17T14:56:31]w350: Applied non-vital package: vs_preclean_vs, encountered error: 0x80070001. Continuing...

    WTH??
Are there any workarounds to this?

I had Visual Studio 2015 Ultimate trial on my computer and I uninstalled it. Now when I try to install Visual Studio 2013 Community the installation stalls on the package Microsoft Azure Mobile Services Tool for Visual Studio - v1.3. Did I miss something when I uninstalled the other version.

  • David LuuDavid Luu

It's too bad the ISO is DVD9, you are then more forced to burn to dual layer disc, or use very specific image mounting tools. Since it appears not all (or common) ISO image mount tools will mount a DVD9 ISO compared to a DVD5, unless the ISO I downloaded is corrupt. Does MS happen to offer an MD5 hash to verify the downloaded ISO against since it's so big. Otherwise, I'm assuming typical ISO mount tools have trouble mounting the ISO image as a virtual "disc". I haven't tried Daemon tools. Does MS have any recommendations on what tool to mount this DVD9 image with?

  • @Alan, sorry to hear you ran into issues with the ISO installer. Can you check to make sure there is enough disk space on your C:\ drive and the drive you choose to install VS onto (if not C:\) and also you were running as admin? Which OS were you running this on? Would you mind sharing with us your setup log file for us to better understand what happened? You can send it to me directly ronglu at microsoft.com.

I was attempting to install on a Windows 7 Ultimate virtual machine with a 40GB vhd (30.1GB free) I was running as Administrator. The ISO was mounted in the host(Windows 7 Professional) through UltraISO.

I'll send over the setup log file as soon as I switch back to this task.

I am curious whether an update Version of VS 2013 will break the ABI between Libraries?

    so ReSharper is included

  • I already have visual studio express installed. So do I need to uninstall it before installing Visual Studio community or does it get replaced automatically. The problem is I can't have both of them installed onto my C: drive.

  • Greg Duncangduncan411 It's amazing what a professional photographer can do...

@Sourab: You'll need to uninstall VS Express. VS Community installs side-by-side with Express (i.e. it will NOT uninstall or replace it, you'll need to uninstall Express yourself).

I am seeing EXACTLY the same issue - can't use VS 2013 at all.
I am totally stuck, I've still got 2012 but no way I can get 2013 to work. (I am a partner, too).

This whole VS online thing seems to be a disaster - it would be if I didn't have another edition installed!

I can't sign in from VS2013 community, get "Sorry, we ran into a problem" and "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation".

My only choice is to exit VS. Not good.

I just want my Pro license back, as with previous Partner editions!

  • @jac: sorry to hear you ran into issues with licensing visual studio 2013.

Are you still seeing the "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" error when signing in?

If so would you be willing to send me a visual studio activity log when you try and sign in. The activity log should have some diagnostic information to help us identity what is causing the issue you are seeing.

Could you follow the steps below to get an activity log?
    1. In your developer command prompt, run "devenv /log [Path to which you want to save the log]\activityLog.xml" which will open up Visual Studio.
    2. In the Visual Studio instance that opened, reproduce your issue. Once that is done, close Visual Studio.
    3. The log file will be saved to the path you specified in step #1.
    4. Find the file and send it to us

You can send it to me directly at chrmann at microsoft.com

    Hi!

Excuse me for my English, is not the best :P

Well, i have installed VS Community, but my License (30 days) is expired. When i want sign in with my Microsoft Account into Visual Studio, i only see a blank screen, and don't appear none field or text for sign in me.

How I can do for sign in me into Visual Studio or, Do exists another form to register my VS community?

  • Greetings, all.

Hopefully, someone will have the solution for this.

I installed Visual Studio Community Edition some 20-something days ago, and of course now is the time to "sign in" and renew.

Problem is: I can't sign in through Visual Studio CE. It displays a typical  "This page can't be displayed" page.

Visual Studio CE was installed through the web installer, not through the ISO-dvd package.

I have VS 2010 Express installed, did the renewal easily (last year).

What can I do to solve this? I have given Visual Studio CE all the necessary firewall permissions, the integrated web-browser can access any webpage but cannot even begin the sign in process.

    Thanks in advance.

SOLVED: so that others may solve this easily, this problem is caused by IE settings. Clearing SSL and reverting IE to default/factory solved it (as suggested here: www.techsupportall.com/solved-cannot-access-secure-sites-https-websites-not-opening-view/).

Hi, I had VS Pro trial version installed on my computer, the evaluation period had expired. I uninstalled it and I installed VS Community 2013, but I can not use it, it says that my trial period has expired, the link "check for an update license" does not work, and the link "order online" leads to a page where there's no solution. I read somewhere that one must extend the VS Pro trial period at least once, but I can't find any link that allows to do so.

    Can someone help me.? Thanks.

    Hi,

Finally I found the solution. Here's what happened when I started Community VS 2013, immediately appeared a window indicating that my trial period has expired. The link "check for an update license" was not working, and "order online" link led to a page where I could not find a solution. When I closed this window, VS closed immediately. Finally I managed to access to "Help ---> Register product" before this window closes, and I activated my license.
