VSTS provides a lot of functionality out of the box, which is great, but does it have the ability to plug into other services, github for source control for example, or Slack for chat?

@Aaron Hoffman VSTS has a lot of extension points. Code on GitHub can be linked to a VSTS Continuous Integration build. For Slack, there is an extension in the new marketplace that's installed by default (https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items/ms-vsts.vss-services-slack).

These extensions make use of things like Service Hooks, the REST services and the newly announced rich extension model (https://www.visualstudio.com/integrate/extensions/overview)

At the moment, the GitHub and Slack integration is from VSTS to GitHub/Slack. If you want to replace some functionality within VSTS, the new extensions are the way to go. You could build an extension that for example replaces the Team Rooms with Slack.
