40 min ago I got an IM from a friend who told me to turn on the TV news... I sat down to see the tag line: "Usama Bin Laden is Dead".

    #%(&%(# YEAH!

I sat down to write this post a lil while ago when waiting for President Obama to give his (late) planned speech... which went quite well... so it must be said #(^&%#*^%*#^ YEAH!

Of course now the USA runs the risk of making him a martyr. Obama's statement said there was a firefight which suggests to me there was an attempt to take him alive, otherwise if the objective was to kill him then simply bombing his compound first would have taken care of that.

The news stream is showing an impromptu street party outside the White House. This whole thing is pretty macabre; I don't see the death of someone, even if that person was the most hated in the world, as something to celebrate. This isn't the end of the "war on terror" by any means.

Also, I'd like to see the long-form death certificate before I believe he's dead for sure.

Alive if possible, dead if necessary tends to be the primary objective with regard to people like him. While there will almost certainly be further events due to his killing... in the end it will be a good thing.[/quote]

If I was in the other Washington... I would be there too! Hell... I'm now cursing I don't have a bottle or two of campaign on ice for events like this… in fact tomorrow I shall go and buy three bottles... one for Obama’s defeat in 2012 (an almost certainty), one for Jay Inslee’s Gubernatorial defeat in 2012 (less likley), and one as a ‘just in case something monumental happens’.

This man (Osama) was a declared enemy of this nation... I'm sorry if you think us cheering his death/personal defeat is a bad thing.

Also, I'd like to see the long-form death certificate before I believe he's dead for sure.

I'd prefer to see his body drug down the street of DC behind an Abrams tank... I doubt I will get my wish though.

...one for Obama’s defeat in 2012 (an almost certainty)

It's possible that this event will probably boost Obama's ratings with people who vote Republican for their emphasis on "action" and retribution. Obama has been losing popularity on account of being perceived as ineffectual, this certainly can't hurt him.

As an aside, there's speculation the release of his birth certificate was a ploy to bring media attention to Trump, to divide Republican voters between the 'Tea Party' candidates and more traditionalist conservatives, thus weakening the Republican party to prevent it from presenting a united front. So it's far from certain he would lose in 2012.

Back on-topic: there's speculation that he was killed a while ago, and that the delay for the announcement was to wait for DNA testing to be done. But I'm sure the details will find their way out soon enough.

He'll be untouchable for a month, then people will turn back to being pissed about the economy and gas prices.

Some parts yes... but the impending certainty of $6 gas (for which I am rooting for reasons unrelated to the current president) and the amazing economic recovery... even the killing of OBL will not change his popularity much in the long run.

Obama has been losing popularity on account of being perceived as ineffectual, this certainly can't hurt him.

It won’t hurt him... though this is something that any president, republican, democrat or Ron Paul (I suspect) would act on... one good note does note win one a second term.

As an aside, there's speculation the release of his birth certificate was a ploy to bring media attention to Trump

You really need to watch/listen to US media a bit more… the pushing of the birth certificate by Trump was pushed more by the local media than it was him (who responded to questions on the subject when asked) (this all being said by a person who would look closely at third party candidates if given the choice between Obama and Trump in November 2012.

to divide Republican voters between the 'Tea Party' candidates and more traditionalist conservatives, thus weakening the Republican party.

Unrelated… this was a punked move… Obama and his crew saw the success Trump was having on this issue and they decided to end it... much to the surprise and shock of Trump… to which he moved to the issue of Obama’s academic records (an issue some of us have been more interested in for a good bit of time).

So it's far from certain he would lose in 2012.

You must not be keeping up with the different approval polls around these parts... let alone the Nov 2010 election results.

Unless the unemployment rate in this country is sub 6%, gas is less than $3.50 a gallon, and the Republican Party doesn’t nominate a John McCain… the Obama Administration will end in early 2013.

What's interesting is he was apparently killed inside a mansion in Pakistan.  So he was hiding in plain sight and not a cave?

I thought I would be overjoyed at this news but I find it leaves me a little scared.  Not sure why, maybe because it shines a light again on how badly us humans can screw up life.

So then why does Fox News report it so differently?

Just goes to show how far they will go to bend the truth in order to control people.

Oh? Care to offer an example of the bending of the truth or attempt to control people?

It could be argued that by running this contrarian piece (that he died of natural causes) they sow seeds of doubt in peoples' minds. People then change from "Oh, I support Obama now because they got Osama!" to "I heard that Barack didn't really kill Osama, so I'm gonna vote for Trump!".

Similar to how pundits brought on to Fox News raised the spectre of Obama being a Kenyan-born Muslim; there's no evidence to suggest it, but it's enough to linger-on in the minds of at least a few  people and sway their positions.

I apologise, I didn't notice the publication date. I thought they were running a contrarian piece in the immediate aftermath of the presidential announcement. It is 0630h so I'm bound to make mistakes.

Fox is pretty much TV version of volksempfänger. At the top of my head there's the incident with palm trees, but they do it on daily basis so it's besides the point.

@dewi: Honestly, how did that slip past me?

    +1

Al-Qaida screaming for the death of the USA, the USA screaming for the death of al-Qaida. Sometimes the differences in behaviour between the two seem a little blurred from my perspective.

While it's a good thing that this man is dead, it's not something to smile about -- the whole thing is a sorry chapter in our history.

@W3bbo: I hope they did try to take him alive, just like Saddam Hussein, and let the appropriate countries law take care of the rest if it.

I must say however, that when you have something as Evil as this in you grasp, I will take either options willingly i.e. alive or dead. Death is indeed a sad event, but I have no sympathy for murderers, especially indiscriminate ones. Matrydom was a given for those whose minds are foolish enough to believe he was a force for good. It was that or being a Legend. My attention now moves to Pakistan...

They have repeadedly stated that he was not living there. Most suicide bombers that have detonated or tried to detonate devices here have come from there.

I note they are reporting the body buried at sea, to stop the creation of a shrine... but I can just see that whack-job David Ray Griffin already working on a new conspiracy theory.
